High-school not issuing any work, I'm totally lost.

My primary age kids have a fantastic set up. An app for kids and a sister one for parents. They get assignments each day and had booklets posted out to work from. They get a variation each day of things. Usually 3 or 4 subjects.

My highschoolers have a homework app they are supposedly receiving work from.

We've had 1 piece of art for DS2 and a geography piece.

Nothing for DS1 who is year 10!!

Ive emailed the school with no reply. Phone is constantly engaged or no answer.

I'm totally out of my depths. I'm not academic at all and can't even think straight when I try to sort stuff out myself. I suffer from mental health issues and get overwhelmed easily.

I just feel like I'm letting them down. DS1 especially. He has GCSEs next year

Get him on www.senecalearning.com/. We are using this as an addition to our actual work set. I know school should be setting work but some have been told to wait for after Easter or they are having issues due to ill staff. I know we are having that problem as I am running my own classes as well as all of year 7 and 8.

Deelish75 · 27/03/2020 09:49

I have heard that some schools aren’t sending anything out until after Easter - to help the parents with the transition. Is it possible this is what’s happening? Very poor communication though.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 27/03/2020 09:59

could you email the school and ask about the work they should be receiving, especially if your dc is in year 10. if they don't provide any resources, then maybe you could make a timetable for your dc?
so:
9-10 maths
10-10:30 break
10:30- 11:30 English
11:30-11:45 break
11:45-12:45 science
etc

for maths, this website is useful as it has video tutorials to how to do the questions. your dc can get worksheets off of the 'maths genie' website to practice the questions he watches how to do in the video

has your ds read all the books for the English course? if not, get him to read them thoroughly. he could start annotating his set poetry pieces (I think all exam boards have this? my dd and ds do), bbc bitesize have loads of resources on how to do this

Seneca is great for science and all the other subjects

all the best

Thankyou.

This is not a teacher bashing threadbbtw. I am in awe of them right now!

I just don't have the ability to do this myself. I will look at the links provided. Thanks

For your year 10 maybe see if you can print some past GCSE papers.

My eldest is year 10 and her set work has consisted of doing the mock exams that she would have been doing this week at home.

sonypony · 27/03/2020 10:13

Maybe try bbc bite size, twinkl and khan academy for now?

CheriLittlebottom · 27/03/2020 10:18

Try Teachit for English, it's a teaching resource website and has masses on it. You can usually get the pdf files for free anytime, but you might be able to get more for free right now. If you know what his GCSE texts are (ie An Inspector Calls, Romeo and Juliet, etc) you will find masses of stuff on those. He should know which exam board he's doing his English exams with (look in his books if he's not sure, there might be something in there that tells you, or some schools have it on the website) Aqa is the most commonly used, there will also be loads for each of the language papers.

GreenTulips · 27/03/2020 10:19

I think the teachers are learning how to educate remotely - conference call set ups work that can be done other than worksheets video lessons etc

Give them a bit of time to sort themselves out

Also get him to revise past lessons and read the books look out for audio books on his subjects

ChloeDecker · 27/03/2020 10:24

Can I check that you or your children have checked your junk mail etc.? I have had a few messages seen on the local Facebook groups from parents at my school saying nothing has been set or sent, when it has and ‘junk mail’ has been the case (or in one case, the child had said there was no work set which wasn’t true and got caught out, oh dear!)
For Year 10, there definitely should be something given to you for every/most subjects.
Go to your school’s website and look for any general email addresses or any extra Covid-19 messages with extra information. Check all yours and your child’s communication to check too.
In the meantime, the Seneca Learning suggested upthread is excellent but I would also heavily recommend GCSE BBC Bitesize for every subject, that is also sorted by exam board. Just get your DC to ‘Google’ it and away they go!

Good luck, it must be very tough Flowers

lamppostdog · 27/03/2020 10:26

Can he get onto the school's VLE or learning platform, if so, then resources should be there eg our pupils can access all our schemes and resources not just individual lessons

OmartheGoose · 27/03/2020 10:29

I clicked on this thread to say senecalearning.com which I see maryberrysbomberjacket suggested. A friend who's a secondary teacher told me about it this week.

noblegiraffe · 27/03/2020 10:38

corbettmaths.com/ is full of resources for maths, including videos to teach each concept, worksheets to practice, and the answers.

If he’s not sure what to do, he could do the ‘5 a day’ for today at the right level, mark it, then anything he got wrong or wasn’t sure if he could do a bit of work on.

Or he could look back at what he has done at school recently, pick something he struggled with and do some work on that.

For maths he needs pen, paper and to be doing questions and marking them. Don’t accept it watched a video’ as sufficient!

Chosennone · 27/03/2020 10:39

Try BBC Bitesize.
Which play/novel is DS studying on English? 'Christmas Carol' 'Romeo & Juliet'? There will be activities linked to these and tutorials on YouTube.

Selfsettling3 · 27/03/2020 10:40

I’m a very recently ex secondary teacher. If you don’t have them already order revision guides to the right exam boards and subjects. I would get him to focus on revising stuff they have already done for now.

userabcname · 27/03/2020 10:49

Has your DS checked his school email? Sometimes when the hw app doesn't work we email tasks instead.
