A thread to show some love for the less-recognised key workers

Don’t get me wrong, I think all the recognition and praise for the NHS, Teachers, Delivery drivers and shop workers are bloody well deserved; and it’s right that they should be thanked for keeping going right now.

It’s just sometimes I get a little sad for my colleagues who do an ‘invisible’ job people don’t even really think about, but is critical to keep the country functioning.

So can we have a little love here as well to show some appreciation for:

Utility Workers (Gas, Electric, Water, Broadband)
Bin men
Those who volunteer with the vulnerable (food banks, befriending, citizens advice)
Postmen
Plumbers, electricians etc
Vets
Mechanics, roadside assistance
Police, Fire, Coastguard, Lifeboat
Early Years workers (nurseries, childminders, nannies)

Has anyone got any others to add?

I was also coming on to say prison staff. They are at serious risk of harm from violence and coronavirus. Would be very tempting to call in sick and i thank the lord they don't!!

Rafflesway · 27/03/2020 13:45

Care/support workers. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

marywinchester · 27/03/2020 13:51

Everyone working in pharmaceutical factories, my husband is working flat out at the moment and his factory is taking on more staff for the next 6 months.

Suniscomingout · 27/03/2020 13:55

Foster carers

YummyBelicious · 27/03/2020 14:36

I work in a call centre for credit cards. I'm spending my time helping people and listening to them crying cause they can't pay their bills. Its so draining and I'm working next to others hoping I don't catch it

nowwaitaminute · 27/03/2020 14:45

Ppl working on oil and gas rigs!

Ppl working in shipping- merchant navy etc

Wattonearth · 27/03/2020 14:52

DWP staff still going into offices to pay all the benefits this can’t be done from home.

LastResponder · 27/03/2020 14:53

Please spare a thought for funeral workers. We are also on the front line, dealing with the deceased with limited PPE, and then trying to placate distraught families who can't have the funeral they wanted, whether the person died from Covid or not. Everything has changed, and it's hard to keep up, and it's only going to get worse as the peak comes.

Care assistants and homeless support workers

Tiredmum100 · 27/03/2020 16:04

Yes, thank you to everyone working to keep things going for others. I work as a nurse and feel carers don't get their recognition they deserve, they are still visiting people at home and risking their health. Thank you to all the people on the production lines to keep the shops stocked!

TheMemoryLingers · 27/03/2020 16:22

Bank cashiers who are at particular risk through cash handling and the difficulty of combining social distancing with privacy.

Call centre folk across all key industries who are experiencing unprecedented call volumes with reduced staffing levels.

Cleaners - all the people who are supporting the above industries by going in to clean their premises.

Fandoozle1 · 27/03/2020 16:56

Pharmacy staff. We feel like shit on everyone's shoes right now, surgeries closed and not taking calls (even though some staff are in), people therefore coming up to us and shouting at us asking where their prescriptions are. That we are a disgrace, etc etc.

adviceatthislatestage · 27/03/2020 18:24

Welfare Benefit advisors and processing staff in Local authorities (and it must be said DWP) plus LA free school meals and crisis grant teams.

The80sweregreat · 28/03/2020 12:54

The DWP are full on at the best of times.
It must be in meltdown now. Lack of staff doesn't help and people might go off sick too which adds to the burden.
People need money to eat and the system can be slow.

ITasteSpring · 28/03/2020 13:03

I totally agree with you!

Betty1233 · 28/03/2020 13:10

Court staff/ ministry of justice workers still keeping the justice system going .

CyrilSneer30 · 28/03/2020 13:16

I think it has been mentioned but Army personnel. DH was given 48 hours notice to leave this morning, and will now be staying in a hotel alongside frontline NHS workers who are unable to go home. We will now not be able to see each other for the foreseeable future and I’m home alone with three boys age 5, 3 and 6 months. It’s going to be pretty tough for all of us!

FishOnPillows · 28/03/2020 13:31

Pharmaceutical manufacturing! From the people on the line operating the equipment, to the lab staff/quality departments testing everything from raw materials to finished products, to finance and HR and security and engineering and everyone else. Tough, tough times at the moment to ensure patients get the medication they need.

Robin233 · 28/03/2020 13:32

Another one for bin Men.
So grateful they are still carrying

On. As mentioned we'd be in aright state.

BetterAlone · 28/03/2020 13:32

Solicitors doing Wills.

Snozzlemaid · 28/03/2020 19:57

Bus drivers.
Out there each day, not knowing each time they stop if a passenger is going to pass it to them.
Dp's company haven't stopped cash payments yet, they're just suggesting people pay by card. The buses he drives don't have screens between the driver and passengers so completely exposed.

Fizzypoo · 28/03/2020 20:01

social workers whilst face to face contact has been reduced if there is a need they are still seeing people face to face. No PPE. Social workers are vital and yet hated or forgotten about.

Plump82 · 28/03/2020 20:53

This is an excellent thread and also just shows you how many people are involved in keeping the show on the road for things we usually take for granted.
I work in in a bank and all focus is on helping customers get payment breaks on their loans and credit cards. It's 1000s upon 1000s of people.

eastegg · 28/03/2020 22:22

Solicitors, barristers, judges, magistrates, court staff and probation officers all dealing with the many criminal cases that cannot be dealt with remotely.

Toomuch2019 · 28/03/2020 22:29

Great idea to start this thread. Big shout out to all those (not me) on the front lines of my industry (energy) to make sure the lights stay on, everything else stays powered and we can be warm and cook.
