Finding this difficult to understand. They now have more cases than China and Italy, but Trump is on about loosening restrictions and opening up areas?

I don't understand any thoughts? It seems he is thinking they have done more testing which is the reason for the numbers. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-52056586

Trump is deluded if he thinks now is the time to loosen restrictions.

Selfsettling3 · 27/03/2020 08:07

Trump isn’t capable of logic.

NeverHadANickname · 27/03/2020 08:08

A lot of state governors are putting their own measures in place which is why there are different rules depending on the state so thankfully not all as deluded as Trump.

Apirateslifeforme · 27/03/2020 08:09

Trump doesnt give a shit about preserving anyones life but his own.
Considering his daughter was recently tested, and he still is not serious about fighting this thing head on, I dont think he ever will.

His interest is the economy
I sincerely hope that this brings about better working rights for all in the US and overhauls their failing medical system.

Piggywaspushed · 27/03/2020 08:10

From what my DM reports about NYC there are very few movement restrictions, no shielding type thing, lots of young people out and about, very little awareness of social distancing. They have closed things down but there doesn't seem to be the same sense of 'rules' as we have here. 'You can't tell New Yorkers what to do' is her logic.

lamppostdog · 27/03/2020 08:14

I have American family, one of whom was posting about how a lockdown went against his civil liberties and the American right to freedom. Hmm

Inkpaperstars · 27/03/2020 08:18

Trump thinks this is all about him and democrats trying to spoil his re elction campaign. He genuinely said at one point that the whole virus was a hoax.

leckford · 27/03/2020 08:19

We can’t believe the China figures.

The US will be badly hit. They have an awful lot of poor people with no healthcare who will have to keep working. They have huge numbers of illegal immigrants no healthcare will also have to keep working.

They also have a huge number of religious nutters who believe god will protect them. Quite a lot of them believe in something called rapture where they will transported to god or something equally bizarre.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/03/2020 08:20

Trump doesn’t care about anyone but himself, is thick as mince and thinks he knows better than anybody so won’t listen to advice. It’s a terrible combination.

What’s more difficult to understand is why his approval rating is going up.

Parker231 · 27/03/2020 08:24

Trump is only concerned about protecting his re-election. He’s ignoring the experts and wants everyone back at work at Easter.

TreeTopTim · 27/03/2020 08:25

Donald Trump is something else. Normal rules and things don't seem to apply to him. I can quite believe that he thinks that this is a hoax.

BigFatLiar · 27/03/2020 08:40

Perhaps some of the Americans on here could say. Is this something the President deals with or is it something delegated to the various State Governors?

JudyCoolibar · 27/03/2020 08:44

The more I see Trump rambling on about this, the more evident it appears that dementia is setting in.

noego · 27/03/2020 08:46

The Federal government issues guidelines. The State governors decide whether to follow them or not. I don't see them doing that TBH in the current situation.
Cuomo has a handle on things but no one seems to be listening at the Federal level.
And how Trump can start a Corona Virus Task Force update with "Its a beautiful day" is beyond comprehension as 100's of US citizens are dying.
And the polls say his popularity is running at 60%.

Beyond belief

NekoShiro · 27/03/2020 08:55

Didn't trump say that he was happy for 3 million people to die so that the economy can carry on as he won't be stopping people from working? And then the stock markets rose 11% afterwards, news stations have also started asking seamstresses to start making homemade face masks to send to hospitals as due to the cdc (I think) guidelines in an emergency of there's no protective equipment cloth masks that meet certain critiria will do :/ I'm very worried about America.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/03/2020 08:58

I had a meeting with colleagues in California last night - California is in some sort of lockdown too, by order of their governor. I don't think they've many cases where they are (south). Like us they're allowed out for exercise and had similar thing of people heading to the beach at the weekend.

MrsJoshNavidi · 27/03/2020 09:05

If California is in lock down, how did Harry and Megs fly in yesterday, presumably with a retinue off staff and security??Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 27/03/2020 09:07

Comparing 'number of cases' isn't very meaningful as different countries are doing different amounts of testing. The U.K. is massively underreporting by that metric. The US ramped up testing, didn't it? What the numbers may indicate is that the infectivity is higher than initial estimate but the serious cases/death rate is lower.

If you want to compare countries, death rate per million is perhaps the most meaningfully comparable metric. The table in this link is sortable, click the column header. San Marino is anomalously high because it's a tiny population.

Orangeblossom78 · 27/03/2020 09:10

Do you think perhaps it is leading to a kind of collective denial, which may be keeping the ratings high? If they think, as a PP mentioned a lockdown would be taking liberty away etc.

Maybe things will change as people see others around them with it, I reckon then there will be widespread panic

I think the US is now a ticking time bomb. When you have a POTUS who won't acknowledge he severity of the situation, and only cares about the economy, his hotels and not humans and life and death... it is a recipe for disaster.

Cuomo in NY says it like it is. What is happening there can hit any US city at any time.

I can't believe we can bring negativity about H&M into a coronavirus discussion... tedious... it's probably their fault it's taking hold in the US.

DippyAvocado · 27/03/2020 09:20

the polls say his popularity is running at 60%.

Really?? I assume that will change if Coronavirus deaths end up worse there than anywhere else, although maybe some Americans will buy into the economy over lives theory. New York looks awful. I saw some emergency service workers being interviewed who said it was worse than 9/11.

LoseLooseLucy · 27/03/2020 09:22

America are going to have a torrid time of it, with Trump in charge.

DippyAvocado · 27/03/2020 09:24

What is happening there can hit any US city at any time.

Although I suppose while the cities will probably be very badly-hit, a lot of the rest of the US is low-density. I guess people who live in the more rural areas will feel far-removed from the virus and more concerned with the economy. Trump's ignore everything policy might play well in those places.

Roussette · 27/03/2020 09:27

I agree Dippy. Until it hits them, they can stick their head in the sand. Personally, I can't understand how anyone can ignore a rising death rate in the country I live in, but there you go.... they are part of the cult that is Trump.

FedUpWithThisToday · 27/03/2020 09:27

Well it's all terrific and great and beautiful out there don't you know! And the American people love to work and it's terrific they'll all be working again in two weeks time! It's beautiful to see them working again. Everyone is doing a great job and it's great out there. The virus is fake news.
