Garden Waste

TheGreatWave · 26/03/2020 22:10

I am wanting to do some work in my garden, it is fairly big and the plants are very mature so I am going to get a lot of waste. The grass is also desperately in need of a cut.

The tip is closed, our green waste has now been pushed back to May, our rubbish bin is tiny so no option of using that.

What are others doing? I have considered a skip -but this seems a little over-kill. I have a new hedge trimmer I want to use it.

Thanks

Make a compost heap.

We have the same problem, and our green bin service is cancelled for now (annoying, as we've just paid for it!). Our tip is open for now but only allows one trip per day and it's not an essential travel reason really.
I think I'm just going to bag it up, make the piles as neat as possible, and burn things when I can.

Incinerator bin?

I've been pondering this and short of a bonfire Shock I don't know what to do.

eddiemairswife · 26/03/2020 22:18

let it grow and enjoy the wild flowers.

Just heap. It up in a corner

Nature will thank you if you can put aside a small area of your garden and let it decompose on it’s own. If you have to have an ultra neat and tidy garden you can clear the area once your garden waste collections start up again. Please don’t burn it, think of the environment.

Some good tips, might just start a mound at the bottom of the garden.

Alternatively I could tip it over the fence onto the school field. Wink

Don't worry, I wasn't being seriois re the bonfire. My cousin is a firefighter and I imagine they will be kept very busy during this, unfortunately.

My garden isn't very big and I need every inch of space for two teenage boys.
Can't let the grass grow as they like to kick a ball about.

Please don't be too eager to use your new hedgetrimmer - birds are already nesting! Farmers are not permitted to cut their hedges between end of February and the end of July except in exceptional circumstances for public safety alongside roads. The same laws should also apply to domestic hedges - there is no need for it until late summer. Every spring and summer people go beserk, manicuring their garden hedges and it breaks my heart to see it, countless thousands of nests are destroyed by over tidy individuals who would probably weep themselves if they only realised the destruction they are unleashing on our bird population. It is also an absolute offence to wilfully damage or destroy a wild birds nest - common sense should tell people that a hedge in spring or summer = a high chance that it contains active nests. Please don't do it!!

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

Actually, I am not sorry - if only one person takes note and thinks twice, that will be an achievement.
