What about those who have been self-employed for less than three years?

Sorry if I dound completely dim but I've only been freelancing for just over 1 year. With the recent announcement of support in the form of averaging out previous 3 years profits, does that mean I don't qualify for the support?

You qualify, but they will use only the information that you filed in that one year. They cannot average it over three years as you only have one tax return filed, so you will get it based on that one year.

Ok, thank you. That's reassuring to hear. It was the way reports were emphasising 3 years and it being hard luck for those that don't qualify that wasworrying me
I've not filed my taxes yet (wasn'trequired to), so I'd better hurry and get them in during that 2 week extension.

You will need to have submitted a tax return for 2018/19 and before to quality.

What about those who started their businesses last year and are yet to make money? My DSis started her business last year, she only started making a profit recently. Filed tax returns for last year, but with zero profits.

FTMF30 · 26/03/2020 20:16

@viccat I guess that's the problem. I didn't start freelancing until 2019, so no 2018/2019 tax return. @r2221 I guess your Dsis is in a similar boat to me. We don't qualify for support 🙃.

Started my business September 2019....no help for me :-(

Haffiana · 26/03/2020 20:18

If you haven't filed for 18-19 then sorry, I am afraid you will not qualify. I thought that you had filed a year already.

It's just pretty shameful really. No real care about individuals, just about saving the economy. It's a good job the self employed make up such a large part of the population or there would have been no offer of support for any of us.

No help for me either. Year 1 -under £1000 turnover, year 2 - £100 profit, current tax year upto March circa £10,000 profit.

Totally understand why they can't include 19/20 tax year in the calculations. The only thing helping is not having to pay nursery fees for the foreseeable future. That's take some Pressure off the household finances.

We're going to have to try the Universal Credit route but I'm pretty sure it'll work out to us getting pittance. I can't help but feel really bitter about the whole thing.
