Could we have had it already

I'm starting to think myself and DC have already had the virus.

DC came back from their dads one weekend in December, A few days later their dad calls and says he's had to call an ambulance because he was struggling to breathe and couldn't stop coughing. Hospital say he has influenza and prescribe antibiotics, which actually didn't work.
A day later, my middle dc starts showing similar symptoms although not so bad. Over the coming days the other DC and myself start feeling under the weather. It took us a couple of weeks to fully recover whereas their dad didn't fully recover for almost a month.

Aibu in thinking this was the coronavirus?

It’s much more likely to have been seasonal flu, OP. If Corona virus had reached the UK in December, we would have peaked at Italian levels long before now.
For goodness’ sake don’t assume that your family are now immune and can take risks - you are almost certainly not. Stay safe, and keep the distancing rules.

Until the antibody test we'll never know. There is at least one Dr suggesting that it's been here since the beginning of January and half of us have been infected.

Personally I think it's very likely I had it over Christmas, I had all the symptoms and have never been so ill in my life. Honestly felt like I was dying at one point and had to crawl to the bathroom.

What seems to have been forgotten in all this is that even apparently healthy people die each year from a "common cold" let alone those in the at risk groups. My autistic brain wants to know how actual overall death rates have changed.

kimlo · 26/03/2020 18:13

how many deaths have their been from seasonal flu amd pnimonia this year? Has it been higher than usual.

If it was here and in the community that early then those figures should be higher than average surely?

theworstluck · 26/03/2020 18:22

@Babdoc I am absolutely taking this seriously and protecting myself and dc and those around us.
We have been social distancing since schools closed, one dc has asthma so I'm not taking any chances. I currently live with parents so I'm lucky enough to not have to take the dc out to the supermarket with me.

@Firef1y72 I saw the same, so that got me thinking. We occasionally get the common cold and even flu from time to time but this, back in December, was like nothing we'd ever experienced before.

That’s very sensible of you, OP. I was just worried you might think you were ok to go out, but you are obviously not a ”daftie” as we say up here! I hope you and your family remain well.

1moreRep · 26/03/2020 19:13

my dp abd i are also sure we have had it, back in january, along with half our sports club.

i should get tested and will be able to find out if i'm immune, which will be a good indicator if it has been around a lot longer

Delatron · 26/03/2020 19:18

There is some suggestion in the media today that our patient zero was not the Brighton guy bit another man returning from the Austrian ski hotspot early Jan. so it could well have been circulating since then. I think if it had been around since December then we would have started seeing deaths earlier.

hiddenmnetter · 26/03/2020 19:27

Seasonal flu death case rate is around 0.1-0.2%. I believe last year (or the year before?) around 35,000 people died from influenza related illnesses. The seasonal flu is one of the biggest annual killers in the world. If C19 keeps in line with that, then expect peak figures in the tens to hundreds of thousands in the UK, and millions worldwide (simply cause so many more will get it). That said, the UK strategy of get the young and healthy infected and try and keep the vulnerable and elderly at home may well reduce that death rate. Once the pandemic is under control we will see what the final figures are.

theworstluck · 26/03/2020 19:28

Conflicting opinions...

If we haven't already had it then I'm more terrified than ever, most of December was pretty grim for us all.

Stay safe everyone

When does everyone think it will peak?

OP posts:
kimlo · 26/03/2020 19:41

June/july then back for a second wave in November.

Based on absolutly nothing but guessing.

Babdoc · 26/03/2020 19:44

Well, we’re running about 2 to 3 weeks behind Italy on the same trajectory, and they’re approaching peak now. So it’s pretty imminent, OP.

LuckyAmy1986 · 26/03/2020 19:51

I had something like I have never had in Jan/Feb, I couldn't breathe properly, couldn't catch my breath I mean breathing in and out was very crackly, bad cough which I never suffer with chest pain, sweating, fever, headaches etc. I was put on antibiotics which didn't work, then a second lot of antibiotics which didn't work (so must have been viral but we didn't know what it was at the time) I was even coughing up blood. I hope that was it. I am not going to presume it was and I am not going to take any risks, but I hope it was. It was horrible though.

itsgettingweird · 26/03/2020 20:31

I read a newspaper article today about the person they think became the zero person. Back tracing.

They had been to a ski resort in Austria and the ski resort is currently being investigated for covering it up.

Who knows if it's true or not but it did mention absense in school aged children with dry cough was high compared to the usual.

It also seems the man himself accepts this and knows about this.

I'm sure there has been extensive contact and back tracing and it would make sense with the direction of travel of the virus through the uk.

itsgettingweird · 26/03/2020 20:32

Should have refreshed. I see it's been mentioned already HmmBlush
