Thoughts on shopping bags? Reusables as normal OR
plastic bags from the shop?

Which is safer right now?

Our local supermarkets have completely run out of plastic bags... we’ve been using our reusable as normal.

I've been using reusable cotton totes and washing them as soon as the shopping is unpacked

covetingthepreciousthings · 26/03/2020 11:45

I was thinking this earlier, a lot of our reusable bags aren't washable, and my husband uses his backpack a lot - but that tends to be left in the porch.

I washed all the shopping in warm soapy water when it came to the house this morning, I felt completely barmy, is anyone else doing this?

I spray all shopping and reusable Sainsbury's bags with alcohol. Not sure if it's overkill or not but it helps me mentally.

LizzieMacQueen · 26/03/2020 11:53

What! You're washing your bags? Never even crossed my mind to.

GreasyFryUp · 26/03/2020 11:54

@covetingthepreciousthings no, you're not being daft. The virus doesn't survive long on cupboard stuff but still wise to wipe down. It can survive for weeks in the freezer though so be extra careful with frozen food.

You see that‘s my worry - I don’t want to go without my bags if I then run the risk of not getting plastic bags, but would rather not take my bags out if that’s a higher risk of bringing the virus back into the house again. I have a couple of bags that can’t be washed (large hessian type) but I guess I could leave them at home and use the rest as they can all be washed when I get home. Normally on a full shop I would fill every bag I own though and I’m really hoping to get as large a shop as possible so that I don’t have to go out again for as long as possible. (Family of 6 so impossible to shop small)

Interesting about freezer stuff - I’ll definitely clean that stuff in whatever way I can - anti bac spray or literally washing it with fairy liquid and hot water? That isn’t going to work well with frozen stuff

It's a fat based virus hence the washing with soap. It breaks down the surround and kills it. Hot water. Alcohol etc all do the trick.

viccat · 26/03/2020 17:18

You won't "bring the virus into the house" - even if someone directly coughs on your bag in the shop (unlikely!), it won't survive on the bag for very long, and certainly can't somehow get to you unless you touch and touch your nose/mouth/eyes before washing your hands. Just use them, wash your hands as you come home and again after unpacking your shopping and then set the empty bags aside until your next shopping trip.

Yes, bleaching everything that is coming in to the house at the min.
