To think people need to be aware that there's more jobs needed for "key" workers to even do their job?!

This is in NO WAY a dig at anyone as I appreciate all of the work ppl do. But all of theses generic Facebook posts that praise the staff at Aldi etc etc...I think ppl are forgetting there are TONS of other ppl working hard behind the scenes, for example;
All of the staff at power stations!
All off those working in the oil and gas industry- oil rigs etc!
All of those in the merchant navy, shipping is literally how the supply chain keeps going!

Literally those three sectors have THOUSANDS of men and woman working in them (and away from their families I may add) they are all still going as much as they can!! I think they deserve recognition too!! That's all really!!

Oh and if anyone had anyone else to add to that list...go ahead!!

No one else wants to recognise these ppl then??

Public transport workers
All transport workers (truck drivers etc transporting food, medical supplies etc)
Farmers
Food factory workers

RightOnTheEdge · 26/03/2020 10:23

My friend is still going to work in a factory as she makes packaging for supermarkets and all sorts of things that couldn't carry on without them.
My mum is 67 and she has to keep going to work as a housekeeper in a hospital even though she is scared. She's not a doctor or a nurse but her job is still very important Smile

ginghamstarfish · 26/03/2020 10:23

Yes, have thought of that, these people are not getting much recognition at the moment but we'd all be stuffed without them - as you say, power stations, water, food etc transport. I for one am grateful to them, no working at home or whinging from them.

strawberrylipgloss · 26/03/2020 12:01

Yanbu There are lots of people not getting the recognition that they deserve-cleaners, care workers, pharmacy workers, delivery drivers, security guards, people maintaining water pipes, electricity, sewers and phone lines, rubbish collectors, people who work in warehouses for online and normal shops, people working in takeaways....

Namechange8471 · 26/03/2020 12:06

I hear you op, my partner is a train driver, he deserves a medal ❤️

fivesecondrule · 26/03/2020 12:07

There's so much emphasis being placed on staying at home (rightly so) that we are forgetting that there are people that work in essential areas to support the running of the country that are going into work day after day. They should be completely praised.

ch3rrycola · 26/03/2020 12:13

I'm a cleaner at a train station. There's lots of us at the moment cleaning high touch areas at the station, and those on trains. Don't see myself as important at all but guess it's still helping. There's def lots of people out there keeping things going,

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 26/03/2020 12:19

I get what you are saying but the staff at supermarkets are paid a pittance and are having to deal with members of the public all day every day. 1000s of people in close proximity possibly carriers and spreaders of CV-19.
Yes there are many many people working hard behind the scenes, but usually in an office or with just colleagues at least, and probably much better paid too.

FWIW, dh is working in a supermarket, potentially risking his life, for £8.21 an hour. I'm also a keyworker (education) and I dont think me babysitting a handful of kids is anywhere near the risk he is taking

Bearfamily1010 · 26/03/2020 12:25

I work for a bank and considered a key worker.

SmileyClare · 26/03/2020 12:30

Agree all these roles need praise too. My brother (electrician) is continuing with essential work, bil (tree surgeon) still cutting trees on railways, my son is still working full time at an electrical suppliers.

I don't think they expect praise at all but they don't warrant criticism for continuing working. I don't know if others have experienced this?

Yesterday 2 people came into the electrical suppliers where my son works to shout at them for being open, calling them fucking morons, they've also received a lot of abuse on their online website for staying open.

My brother in law has also had people passing by when cutting trees to tell him he shouldn't be working, shouting from cars and just being generally abusive.

I get that everyone is frustrated and angry at our situation but the abuse is awful. The country needs to keep functioning at a basic level which means some trades need to continue.

Sorry for the small rant.

nowwaitaminute · 26/03/2020 12:32

@AHippoNamedBooBooButt you see there are tons of ppl behind the scenes who are also paid a pittance and not wfh. My friends DH is in the merchant navy, on a ship working 6 weeks at a time (on constant shift work and no days off!) he doesn't know when he'll get off the ship next because of all this!! If one person on that ship gets sick then they are all in quarantine. And a lot of merchant navy staff are not paid that well tbh. Those ships also need cooks and oil rigs also need cleaners etc.

My father worked for the merchant navy, 12 weeks on, 6 weeks off, all throughout my childhood so I know that lifestyle well. We also knew it before mobile phones and internet where all we got was a postcard every few weeks. No it isn't massively paid but the tax free status of the job also meant the low pay wasnt as low as it seems.

But I'm not disputing how difficult it is for everyone going out to work at the moment. The op was having a moan about supermarket workers getting more praise then energy workers and I was just trying to explain why they might be.

I appreciate everyone of those people out there doing their jobs to keep this country running ❤

nowwaitaminute · 26/03/2020 12:44

Not all merchant navy positions are tax free unfortunately.
