If I leave a four pack of beer for the dustmen.....

Is that a nice thing to do in current circumstances or a bit weird?

If I leave it on top of the wheelybin (with a note?) what do you reckon the chances of it still being there by the time they come?

It’s a lovely thought but alcohol may not be suitable for everyone. Why not an ice full bucket of soft drinks or/and some chocolate bars or crisps?

Makeitgoaway · 26/03/2020 07:39

I think when you do a token gift for people who dont know you cant hope to cater for all needs, it's the thought that counts. There may also be someone in the team who can't have all that sugar....plus I'd have to go to the shop to get that lot!

I think that’s lovely. If there is a non drink they will appreciate the thought.

Lovely thing to do!

Point taken - we live in an area with a high Muslim population. And yes - sugar may not be appropriate either! Leave the beer - it’s a lovely gesture.

It's a nice thought, but they'd have to pick it up wearing their gloves which have been handling everyone's bins, and may not think to wash to cans before opening them. They might pick up a stomach bug or whatever. Not sure they'd have anywhere to store it in the cab?

I think at this point it might be better to tape a message to your bin lid eg
' Thanks! I owe you all some beer when this is over'.

My toddler ran out with a packet of penguin biscuits for our bin men. Figured as they were double wrapped they’d be able to accept them with gloves on and take them off to unwrap them. They seemed happy with them though!

I think it's a nice thought.

I'm an NHS nurse (mental health) and have deactivated my NextDoor account cos amongst other things i got fed up with all the virtue signalling of people "wanting to support our NHS heroes" and kept talking about sending pizzas up to the hospital and (my own favourite) "let's all stand outside tonight at 8pm and bang saucepan for our NHS heroes." There was no offer of help or advice when I asked if someone could tighten my bike brakes to get me into work. I kept saying 'we're not the only ones working' and reminded them that bin men, along with police, prison officers, supermarket staff etc were also doing their bit for the current crisis. I'm glad others are being appreciated.

Ps love the idea of the Penguins. Sweet!

dorapicasso · 26/03/2020 09:48

Our bin men would bite your arm off. Lovely idea, I might put some beer out for ours.

kingkuta · 26/03/2020 09:57

Lovely idea OP

GrumpyHoonMain · 26/03/2020 10:05

Lovely thought but leave a big note on it else they may chuck them.

Theodoreb · 26/03/2020 10:43

I have 4 spare cans may do the same tbh. Lovely idea.

I like that you said dustmen, reminds me of being a kid when a bin was small metal with a rubber lid and it was a dustbin, not a bin. In the days when there was hardly any rubbish. We were a family of 6 and dustbin was only small. I'm only 50 and just remember the rag and bone man who had a horse and cart...
