Sitting in your garden...

Dennisreynoldsduster · 25/03/2020 23:00

...is allowed right? We sat outside today to get some fresh air then it occurred to me our neighbour was doing the same (behind a tall fence though!) and we definitely weren’t six meters apart...

More of a musing really. I think I’ve fallen down a mumsnet anxiety rabbit hole and now I’m wondering about things that would never have occurred to me otherwise

You’re allowed in your garden. 2metres apart, not 6.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 23:02

Its 2 meters or 6 feet. Yes the garden is fine

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 23:03

Metres*

Lifesavesocialdistance · 25/03/2020 23:09

Yes you are but wait for the baying crowd to tell you to just stop being so fucking selfish and get back into your cupboard inside.

LonginesPrime · 25/03/2020 23:14

Yes, even people getting the shielding letters from the NHS are being told it's fine to sit in their own private gardens (or on their doorstep away from people if they don't have a garden).

Obviously not near others, though.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 25/03/2020 23:15

Yes definitely, your body will love all the vitamin D 😊

Lycidas · 25/03/2020 23:20

You CAN legally go into your garden, but think hard before you do - is it really absolutely necessary? Can you limit it to maybe once a week? I personally haven't stepped outside for three weeks and am not intending to do so until January 2022. I have reserved weekly Ocado and organic meat deliveries until then.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 25/03/2020 23:20

Oh Blush shouldn’t have opened that stockpile of wine should I!! I thought six meters was a lot!

Dennisreynoldsduster · 25/03/2020 23:21

I think getting out into the air is important. I think you’re probably as likely to contract it in your garden as you are from deliveries ... that’s my risk assessment anyway!

@Lycidas it took me a couple of lines to realise! Such is the self-righteousness being demonstrated by a lot of people on here at the moment!

lubeybooby · 25/03/2020 23:25

@Thepigeonsarecoming you can only get vitamin d from the sun in the uk between may and september, between 11am and 1pm ish (has to do with a certain angle needed or something)

it still feels good though of course and good for mental health

ironicname · 25/03/2020 23:25

@Dennisreynoldsduster I don't follow. Why are you just as likely to get it in your garden?

HerRoyalNotness · 25/03/2020 23:28

Enjoy the garden. We are at the moment. Neighbours slightly further away than 2meters. They’ve been sending their boys out of play a couple of times a day in theirs too. It’s good for the soul, especially with a drink in hand

PickAChew · 25/03/2020 23:30

You'll only get it in your garden if someone has recently been in and contaminated all the surfaces or if someone leans over the fence and breathes it onto you.

HanaHeya · 25/03/2020 23:30

I suspect all Ocado weekly delivery slots will be cancelled soon so the service can be better distributed amongst all customers not just a few Lycidas . Will one trip to the garden be enough to tend your home grown vegetables, will they be ready in time and are the chickens settling well?

Thepigeonsarecoming · 25/03/2020 23:39

@lubeybooby from the NHS website “In the UK we get most of our vitamin D from sunlight exposure from around late March/early April to the end of September”

“During the autumn and winter, you need to get vitamin D from your diet because the sun isn't strong enough for the body to make vitamin D.”

I thought I had the wrong degree for a minute then so double checked! 😂. its just based on how sunny it is, at the moment it’s ideal 😊

blue25 · 25/03/2020 23:41

Yes it’s fine. Sitting in my garden is keeping me sane.

MoltonSilver · 25/03/2020 23:55

Anyone who has a garden should use it.

Randomschoolworker19 · 26/03/2020 00:05

If you're staying isolated at home and not going out then sitting in your garden is a good thing. You're allowed out of your home for exercise after all.

I'm a key worker and I don't leave my apartment which I live in by myself unless I'm going to work or food shopping. I do sometimes sit on my balcony to get some fresh air and because I enjoy watching the squirrels and birds in our little leafy suburb.

To clarify, people sitting in their gardens isn't the problem... It's dickheads going to the beach and parks or having huge BBQs where everyone is invited which is the problem.

HonestlyItsFine · 26/03/2020 00:16

The distance of the neighbour is completely irrelevant if there is a solid fence between you. As long as you are not both climbing up and talking directly to each other, it's fine.
