My OH was made redundant in January and we are now living on £73 a week. Myself and DC are disabled and I am high risk.

Due to redundancy pay we cannot claim any other benefits. I really don't know what to do.

Which is what redundancy is for. However he has had 3 months, plus the consultation period to job seek, pre this crisis.

Greenbutterlfy566 · 26/03/2020 14:18

Liz-in normal circumstances yes that's what redundancy payment is for. These circumstances are not normal

Yes, it's a shame he didn't get another job before all this happened.

There are jobs so don't worry. In care homes, in delivery, in supermarkets.

I know you are high risk yourself and you are as a family in a difficult situation now. I think you need to do something about it now. Your dh can't stay at home and not live on them redundancy money.

If you are a 'shielded person' the government advice is still that the other members of your family can work as normal, taking the same precautions if social, distancing that we are all adhering too.

Things are difficult (for everyone) but your husband is allowed to work. Supermarkets are hiring if needed.

Greenbutterlfy566 · 26/03/2020 16:13

There are no jobs in the local area at all

Then he’ll have to look further afield. Everyone’s in the same boat. My income came to a halt last Thursday, it’s no ones fault and it’s shit, but you have savings, that’s more than some.

Greenbutterlfy566 · 26/03/2020 16:29

George - I assume the goverment are going to help you out?

We can assume all we like but my bank account is still empty and my rent is due tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

There are no jobs in the local area at all

There no supermarkets, supermarket warehouses, care homes at all in your area?
That's very unlikely.

SouthernComforts · 26/03/2020 17:37

Seriously? Spend some of the thousands you have in the bank you wind up merchant, or move to where there are jobs if you live someone where supermarkets and care homes don't exist Hmm

littlemixarerubbish · 26/03/2020 17:40

It is really awful timing, but you do have money if you have the redundancy pay. Once that is below the savings threshold, you can claim benefits.
Is there not a single supermarket, care home etc anywhere near you? What kind of area do you live in? The NHS is also crying out for people. You don't need to qualified I any area I particular.

ChipotleBlessing · 26/03/2020 18:13

What is it you would like? Do you think you should be entitled to the income protection which a few people will be eligible for in a month or three? Loads of people aren’t eligible for it and have been trying to register for universal credit because they’ve been laid off without getting a large redundancy payment.

It feels unlucky for you, but you have the money in the bank to spend. That’s what it’s there for. Once it is below the cut off you will be eligible to claim more benefits.

Lots of places actually are taking on at the minute - supermarkets, 111 etc. There will be lots of competition for the jobs but it doesn’t sound like your DH is even applying?

May be useful for you, OP?
