Are dental appointments still going ahead

I know they can’t do treatment but can they still do check ups?

My dentist called today to cancel my check up and hygenist appointments for April. Tbh I was going to call tomorrow to do the same. General appointments are not essential.

SuckingDieselFella · 25/03/2020 18:41

Are you serious?

Corneliusmurphy · 25/03/2020 18:42

As above dp’s appointment was rescheduled for June.

Evilcat · 25/03/2020 18:42

Mine has been cancelled

Lordfrontpaw · 25/03/2020 18:43

Some are if it’s an emergency (so if your crown pops out).

Workingwoes · 25/03/2020 18:43

Was supposed to have a crown fitted next week. It's been cancelled by the dentist. I checked their website and they are now closed. Though one of their branches is remaining open simply for absolute emergency situations.

unhappyclap · 25/03/2020 18:44

I don't think check ups are essential appoitnments, so even if they were open you should still stay indoors.

Lordfrontpaw · 25/03/2020 18:44

Have you got a temporary one or were you going for a fit?

Sparrowlegs248 · 25/03/2020 18:44

I had an appointment for Friday which was cancelled yesterday. I know it has to be, but so disappointed, I've got a chipped tooth and a crown missing.

My tooth broke today right down to the gum and I managed to see a dentist today as an emergency as it was sensitive and probably non recoverable if left. I've had a temporary patch put on it to see me through the next three weeks until they have more info and I hope it holds. I was the only person in there and the dentist had a full face mask on and double gloved. They were very nice and understanding and dint make me feel that I was making a fuss over nothing.

Routine appointments have been cancelled though for the kids.

SuckingDieselFella · 25/03/2020 18:48

You are only supposed to go out for exercise or essential food shopping and you should limit these trips as far as you can. You are supposed to observe social distancing of at least 2 metres.

OP were you aware of this before you asked about check-ups?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 25/03/2020 18:50

You’ve got it the wrong way around. Emergency treatment yes, but NO to check ups (they aren’t essential Hmm )

Lordfrontpaw · 25/03/2020 18:50

slalomsuki - ow ow owy owy. Please stick to soft food! I had a temp crown pop out when eating a piece of bagel and it hurt like hell.

SexTrainGlue · 25/03/2020 18:50

Urgent assessment and some care only

Anything which requires a high power drill has to be done in hospital with staff in PPE

You might get patched up for now, with proper treatment when conditions ease.

They might still be doing pre-chemo routine check ups, certainly, won't be doing any others

icelollycraving · 25/03/2020 18:51

I had mine cancelled, they are only doing absolute emergencies at mine. One of my teeth is really painful but I have a cold, so staying in.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 25/03/2020 19:41

I was just coming on to ask about dentists

At lunchtime I cracked my tooth right down to the gum. It tastes vile and really, bloody hurts.

Going to call the dentist and hope they get me in. Frightened that they won't be able to see me. Ouch.

Cheesypea · 25/03/2020 19:45

My friend works for a large dental firm. Emergencies only.

Takemebackto · 25/03/2020 19:47

Boris did say people could attend medical appointments so I was just wondering if dental care came under that.

Powerfulpam · 25/03/2020 19:50

Absolutely not. We are only dealing with real dental emergencIes such as
Swelling, pain which isn’t helped by painkillers, bleeding which won’t stop or severe trauma.
A lost filling or crown is not an emergency. Dental practices should be providing telephone triage and providing advice.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 25/03/2020 19:52

So is a cracked tooth causing lots of pain an emergency?
I've had nurofen and paracetamol and it hasn't touched it...

SuckingDieselFella · 25/03/2020 19:53

@Takemebackto
ESSENTIAL medical appointments. That means chemo and dialysis.

Is a dental check up essential? Have a think about it.

I can't believe people are still posting this stuff.

Watch the news.

Takemebackto · 25/03/2020 19:55

I know it’s not an emergency but problems are surely better off identified at an early stage? If for example I went to my check up and needed a filling in a few months if left for a few months that could lead to root canal and significant amount of pain.

Jonb6 · 25/03/2020 19:56

@Carrotcakeforbreakfast if you can contact your dentist do so, you may have an infection. They should be able to prescribe a week of antibiotics which will help for a month until they reopen.

Forgotten2020 · 25/03/2020 19:57

The BDA published nhs England’s letter today at 12.11 saying dentists could not even treat emergencies and that all emergencies that needed physical treatment (private or nhs) would have to go to a hub which would have full protective gear.
