Self-isolating = not going out at all!!

MasterOfCaffeine · 25/03/2020 15:32

Can't believe I even need to point it out but I've seen so many threads where people say in one breath that they're self-isolating, and in the other they say that they're going for daily walks on quiet roads etc.

Self-isolating means staying indoors and not going outside, except in your own enclosed garden. No walks, no trips to the shop, nothing.

If you are avoiding contact with people but still going for walks then you are quarantining, not isolating.

It makes a difference because by misusing the phrase, the real meaning of it becomes vague and people who really should be self-isolation end up leaving the house because they think it is all right to do so.

It amazes me the amount of people on my road I’ve seen suddenly turning into fitness enthusiasts and going for multiple walks a day. Is it really necessary if you didn’t go for daily walks/runs before as your normal routine why now?! Is it that hard to just stay indoors?!! Everyone I speak to says they’re going for a walk I know the weathers nice and people get bored but go in your garden this virus won’t stop spreading unless people stay at home.

CendrillonSings · 26/03/2020 00:01

Too many people are too ignorant to understand that each person who isolates themselves - in real isolation, not pretend isolation - eliminates many more knock-on infections that would otherwise occur if they lived life normally. Basic biology, basic mathematics, but some people are just too special to inconvenience themselves for the sake of saving lives Hmm

SexTrainGlue · 26/03/2020 00:02

Yes, they've lost the difference between

  • social distancing (going out for work and essential reasons only, plus one walk/run/cycle ride for exercise; all keeping 2m from people)
  • self isolation (not going out at all* taking precautions as far as possible to distance from cohabitants)

(*unless shield group who are isolating for own protection who have go out to attend essential medical appointments, probably icw their underlying condition)

Mumsie43 · 26/03/2020 00:07

That's why they suggest changing the wording to quarantine not self isolating
Of course your allowed outdoors and the comment many are turning to fitness
Of course they are it is difficult for some of us to maintain indoor living for our mental health and wellbeing's just unnatural.
I wish your government was more clearer on the rules maybe be less posts of people claiming your not allowed outside.
Well you are with a 2 metre distance between you. Enjoy your walks

Twinkle1208 · 26/03/2020 09:07

I’m not saying you can’t go for a walk but a lot aren’t following the guidelines. My sister lives in Spain and isn’t allowed out at all unless going to the shops (Which isn’t in walking distance) otherwise you receive a fine, what about their mental health and well-being?
The quicker everyone co-operates the quicker this will be over.

Windyone · 26/03/2020 09:11

I’m a bit confused by it all now. I thought over 70s were supposed to be self-isolating. Is that not the case? In my local group an over 70 was as asking for runners to stay further away from her as they kept breathing near her and brushing against her.
Why on Earth are people walking in areas that are so busy and particularly over 70s.

Abraid2 · 26/03/2020 09:11

Self-isolating does mean you’re allowed out for exercise! It’s in black and white on the gov.uk website.

If possible, you should not go out even to buy food or other essentials, other than exercise

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 26/03/2020 09:13

Sheilding

Is when you don't go out at all

For the extremely vulnerable

Spam88 · 26/03/2020 09:14

Over 70s haven't been told to self-isolate, only the very vulnerable group.

Windyone · 26/03/2020 09:20

OK so almost everyone can still go out to shop and exercise and where I am it seems to be busy with people exercising too close to each other.
So if I’m self-isolating because someone in my household has Covid-19 I can still go out and exercise despite possibly being infectious? How are we going to stop this spreading?

EllieQ · 26/03/2020 09:22

The NHS guidelines state that if you are self-isolating you ARE allowed to go out for exercise as long as you comply with social distancing rules:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-advice/

People are following the official advice!

Read it, then come back and apologise for posting something stupid and self-righteous Angry

Abraid2 · 26/03/2020 09:24

Well if you live somewhere crowded, you probably do have to wait until after dark or go out very early. That's a shame.

Where I live, it's rural and the village population is about 210. I can exercise without coming into contact with anyone. When my son had suspected (very unlikely) CV and we were self-isolating, we were able to go out, with care. In a more densely populated area we may have stayed in or gone out after dark. There are some disadvantages of living here: it can be lonely, the power sometimes goes off and we sometimes suffer from roads flooding or being blocked by snow. Payback has been a safe place to exercise outside now.

But these blanket MN exhortations unbased on/contradicting any official government/NHS instructions are becoming tedious.

Snowflakes1122 · 26/03/2020 09:24

Oh yes, suddenly everyone’s into fitness now. Taking their kids to beaches and driving to the mountains for walks. These are the same idiots who went to play parks at the weekend and seaside resorts. Hmm

Emmacb82 · 26/03/2020 09:25

If you look at the government guidelines if you are self isolating you are still allowed to go for one lot of exercise a day, but to be particularly careful about where you go and not bumping in to anyone.
You are not supposed to go out for anything else though.
We have been self isolating since the weekend as my son had a cough, which disappeared after a day and was more likely a cold! But we’ve not left the house at all apart from one 10 minute walk at 7pm last night and we didn’t see a soul.

SexTrainGlue · 26/03/2020 09:26

Fucking hell

Yes, I've just read that page and it says you can still go out even if you are in symptomatic SI

No wonder we're fucked

Windyone · 26/03/2020 09:28

It seems crazy to me that people who are probably infectious can go out. How will we ever stop the spread?

Abraid2 · 26/03/2020 09:29

It says you can go out after seven days if you no longer have a temperature.

Abraid2 · 26/03/2020 09:31

It seems crazy to me that people who are probably infectious can go out. How will we ever stop the spread?

You are not supposed to go into shops. You are supposed to keep a two-metre distance between you and everyone else outside your household. If you do both these things, how are you going to pass on the virus?

Windyone · 26/03/2020 09:38

@Abraid2 but that’s not always happening. You can’t guarantee that people will keep the correct distance from you. Like the lady on my local group who was complaining that runners were breathing close to her and brushing against her.

supercee · 26/03/2020 09:41

^ These posts are so ridiculous. There are two categories -

Self isolate if you are at risk, displaying symptoms etc etc = don't go out at all.

Everyone else = go out once for exercise or essentials food and medicine. Even though people might not have exercise as their routine before, they probably still walked to/from work, walked places on lunch break etc. It all adds up.

Though they shouldn't be going for 'multiple walks a day'. How do you even know they are going for multiple walks a day? Are they telling you this?

I wasn't mad in to exercise before this, now I am taking myself off for a brisk walk every morning keeping to distancing guidelines, I might even progress into a run shock horror, as it's good for my mental health.

Being enforced to stay in bar one episode out a day can be a toll on mental health. Why are you sneering are those looking to alleviate that? Regular fitness folk have no more right to be outside than couch potatoes.

supercee · 26/03/2020 09:42

And why do people on MN assume everyone has a garden?!!!

potter5 · 26/03/2020 09:43

I am in self-isolation for 14 days. Husband going out to get food.
I haven't been out of the house AT ALL.

Am now on day 10.

TBH it isn't hard. I have my laptop so working from home, have the TV and Kindle fire. Have a garden.

What else do you need?

user1471439240 · 26/03/2020 09:46

The emergency legislation will be enacted today. Expecting further restrictions by 00:00 Monday.

SexTrainGlue · 26/03/2020 09:48

Supercee that's what I thought. Until I looked at the government page linked by EllieQ

It says that you can go out for daily exercise when symptomatic.

If this is an error, they need to get this page amended/taken down/clearly marked as archive page, no longer valid guidance ASAP. Because that advice strikes me as fucking stupid for the symptomatic,ut fr as ing as the Government publishes stuff which says it's OK, people will do it.

'Do not leave your home if you have symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) or live with someone who does.

'This is called self-isolation.

'If you are self-isolating, you must:

'not leave your home for any reason, other than to exercise once a day – but stay at least 2 metres (3 steps) away from other people
'not go out to buy food or collect medicine – order them by phone or online, or ask someone else to drop them off at your home
'not have visitors, such as friends and family, in your home
'You can use your garden, if you have one.'

Miriel · 26/03/2020 09:52

Yes, I've just read that page and it says you can still go out even if you are in symptomatic SI

That's scary. And people are still saying that there's no reason to wear a mask.

If you're unwell, stay at home. Never mind what the government says, use some common sense. A week without outdoor exercise won't do you any harm.
