Very sad, thoughts with her husband and children.

Doesn't work that way, Moomin, thank fuck! Good grief, the mentality of some people. Hmm 'I'm more imporant!' 'I'm special!' 'I should be a priority!'

www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/revealed-official-guidance-doctors-decide-coronavirus-patients/

Paul Nuki@PaulNuki (Telegraph)

1/7 Official guidance sets out rules for doctors triaging critical care in UK ....

  • provides "algorithm" to guide doctors
  • says patients to be considered by "frailty score"
  • data on mortality by pneumonia by age
  • advises on cancer/ and dialysis

Sobering reading

2/ In Italy, doctors have reportedly been forced to discriminate between patients based simply on age.

The NICE guidance does NOT categorise by age
but instead asks doctors to score patients on a “clinical frailty scale” [CFS] as they might normally do. ‪#COVIDー19‬

3/ Admissions to be made on the basis of “medical benefit, taking into account the likelihood that the person will recover to an outcome that is acceptable to them and within a period of time consistent with the diagnosis,”

says NICE.
Here's the algorithm: < screenshot 2 >

4/ The triage guidance also provides doctors with mortality data for patients suffering from pneumonia
in critical care beds compared to a regular hospital ward.

This is age banded. < screenshot 3 >

5/ Data banded by age is also provided for critical care patients
with and without underlying heart and lung conditions < screenshot 4 >

6/ Covid-19 patients receiving treatment for cancer or who need dialysismust also be carefully assessed ahead of admission.

“Where decisions need to be made about prioritising patients for treatment,
these need to take into account the level of immunosuppression,”
it says.

7/ ‪*@NICEComms*‬
Nice says the guidelines will be updated as more data becomes available.

They have been produced in collaboration with NHS England and a cross-specialty clinical group, supported by the specialist societies and Royal Colleges

Moomin8 Do you realise how upsetting that sort of comment is to the childless and childfree? It's a really nasty thing to suggest their lives are worth less than parents' lives.

ffswhatnext · 25/03/2020 17:00

Parents cannot be prioritised simply because they have dependents. What about those who care for older relatives?

Everyone who is ill has the same priority based on their needs at the time seen/spoke to.

Imagine, playing the bloody parent card, so you get priority. Yet next door the single person who also calls up with breathing difficulties to be told to join the queue. That persons need to live doesn't reduce simply because they haven't procreated.

Yes, of course, it's sad when parents die. But let's get some perspective here. She is not the only parent to have died at her age or even younger.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2020 17:03

Having dependents - of any type - is not included in the above NHS triage rules

Rightly so
Each should be - and is - assessed on their own clinical condition and prospects

Hazelnutlatteplease · 25/03/2020 17:04

The paramedics would have also made it clear if she deteriorates, or any changes, call .. and a list of options given.

The problem is this virus doesn't work that way. You can think you have minor and the you deteriorate quickly.

This is why China admitted minor cases to observation wards set up in gyms etc and anyone with underlying conditions to hospital.

We have told people to go home

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 25/03/2020 17:06

Do you realise how upsetting that sort of comment is to the childless and childfree? It's a really nasty thing to suggest their lives are worth less than parents' lives.

Or young adults who haven't had a chance to reproduce if they so choose? Or those whose children are grown but are still relatively young? Mind-blowing entitlement.

SimonJT · 25/03/2020 17:12

People with young children should not be a priority.

I say that as a lone parent, there is no second parent, there is no legal grandparent, there’s just me and a cousin who lives abroad. Like any sensible parent there are plans in place if anything happens to me.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2020 17:17

imo one reason for Germany's low death rate is that at least daily they phone every CV case at home,
to check how they are and if there have been any changes, new symptoms etc

This means they can be given medical attention if their condition deteriorates, rather than leaving it to become an emergency

This is manpower intensive and is done by an army of public health service workers

ffswhatnext · 25/03/2020 17:25

I know it can quickly deteriorate. CV is no different to other illnesses in that sense.

BogChoc, we can call gp surgeries/111/999 if we deteriorate or anything changes.I can only speak for myself. It would annoy me getting daily calls. For starters, it's bloody painful to talk lol.

MrsSnitchnose · 25/03/2020 18:30

That's awful, that poor family Sad

woodhill · 25/03/2020 18:41

Terrifying. Poor family☹️

2ndAugust · 25/03/2020 18:53

Truly horrific. God bless her and her poor family. I’ve been so busy with the practicalities of it all, shopping, making sure my parents and pil are ok, checking on neighbours, being able to work from home. It’s easy to lose sight of this.
