What oven?

Can anyone please help.

I am in the 12 week shielding category. The guidelines are v strict about any contact at all.

What one piece of equipment can I put in the utility room so that my working amongst people DC avoids me for 3 months?

There isn't much space.

Does anyone have any quick suggestions?

Thank you lovely people.

I'm really sorry but I have no idea what you are asking...

Isadora2007 · 25/03/2020 23:59

Ummm- do you mean your child (grown) who works with people can’t be with or around you so you want to put stuff in the utility room- so they can eat there and then go to their room? So they’d need maybe a microwave?

ssiml · 25/03/2020 23:59

is it specifically an oven you need? what about one of those counter top ones? are they halogen ovens or something?

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/03/2020 00:04

Do you really need an oven?
How about a microwave and/Or a slow cooker?

onlinelinda · 26/03/2020 05:46

Sorry for being dense. Tricky times and currently unwell.

My young adult dc is now a key worker, which is a disaster for my health . This is because I have been placed in shielding by GP., meaning no contact with outside works for 12 weeks at this stage.

I need to section off the utility for his sole use, until the COVID crisis is over. I'm trying to find ways for him to safely cook after work and refrigerate.

Please do you have any suggestions? I
did think microwave but would that not be limited eg no pizza? (Imagine that! I hate the stuff but it may even put him off the job 😄).

Thanks to you x

Halogen oven would be a good idea. Sits on the counter like a microwave and is similar size. You can cook pretty much anything in it, including pizza.

Plexie · 26/03/2020 06:08

So you want a mini oven? With or without a hob?

Google Baby Belling or mini oven. Although there seems to be low stock online at the moment, from the quick search I've just done.

Eg ao.com/l/search/101/99/?search=Mini%20oven

Be very careful about fire safety - keep a clear distance around the cooker and always switch off at the socket after use (better to remove plug completely each time).

onlinelinda · 26/03/2020 22:06

Thank you both. Just seen this. I'll explore those options.

OP posts:
onlinelinda · 26/03/2020 22:09

@plexie do you think they are a particular hazard? That would concern me, as Ds is only 19 and I absolutely can't go in there if cv is possibly around.

I'm unwell anyway atm but it could well be something else.

OP posts:
Plexie · 27/03/2020 13:07

@onlinelinda

No I don't think they are particularly hazardous but they are intended to get very hot, so need consideration about safe use. Like you would for an iron. I'm sure the instructions will include safety advice, eg leave a gap around it, don't store anything flammable next to it (papers, flammable liquids), that sort of thing.

As for taking the plug out of the socket, I do that with my iron because it's the easiest way to be certain I've switched it off.

Elouera · 27/03/2020 13:14

You can get microwaves with a grill inside also. Might be fine to cook a frozen pizza?

Bringringbring12 · 27/03/2020 13:16

Is he going to live in the utility room?!

Elouera · 27/03/2020 13:16

Not to cook say a whole chicken though.
In addition to either a halogen cooker thing, does he like toasted sandwiches? Maybe some additional, smaller appliances to add variety, like a mini grill or sandwich toaster.

CovidConcerned · 27/03/2020 13:26

You can buy a microwave which doubles as an oven and a grill. That is what I used when we had building work done and couldn’t use our kitchen for three months.

onlinelinda · 27/03/2020 15:57

Thanks all. Thanks @plexie.

I have a largish office off the dining room , with a utility room and separate loo off that. So he'd have a sitting area, plus a French door and utility room door. The office already has a sofa bed and desk.

It isn't ideal and absolutely not what I want. It doesn't make sense in terms of laundry, and I and having to leave that ds to do all laundry is absolutely laughable. Showers for him would be an issue.

But what options do I have? I have the 12 week shielding letter, so I have to avoid cv, unless I have got it already. He wants to work, so i can't see an alternate other than saying no. Or getting a damned test, as if!

I'm might do micro and grill. Thank you. Any other suggestions for this dilemma welcome!

If definitely recommend a halogen oven. Ours is used virtually every day. Can roast a whole chicken and whilst that is resting, potatoes and yorkies. Pizzas, pies, toast, toasted sandwiches, small cakes, bread rolls, sausages etc and lots of ready meals can be cooked. Jacket potatoes, fish etc, all cook beautifully. A small microwave would be good for things like rice, beans etc. If you get some steamer bags that he can use for veg, he could probably cook almost anything between the Two appliances.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/03/2020 16:48

Get some foil baking trays then you can cook things in the oven for him and leave them by the utility room. When you are safely back from the utility room he can collect it. He won’t need to give the trays back so very low risk of transmission.

Bringringbring12 · 27/03/2020 16:57

Is there absolutely no way he can stay with a friend or family?

onlinelinda · 27/03/2020 23:04

I will look at both of those suggestions too.

We don't have very local relatives, unfortunately.

Thanks everyone-that's a shopping shortlist, I think.

I know you posted this last week, and will likely already have a solution, but I saw that lidl have these 9 in 1 oven things for sale in a few days:

onlinelinda · 05/04/2020 11:27

Thank you. I am sorted now and bought a microwave grill and an iceQ in the end.

@onlinelinda- Ahh, good to hear you got it sorted.
