10 month old has been abit off it yesterday but is teething so didnt think much to it, her temp was creeping up to 37-37.4 gave her calpol which brought it down, put her to bed once I was sure she was safe. Shes woke up this morning temp is 38.6 and shes really unsettled and whingey, I've given her calpol and shes asleep on me atm havent rechecked temp yet. 111 or ring DRs? Just want to know how to manage temperature, when is too high, what to do if.. etc

38.6 is not a very high fever.
fever essentially is a good thing, it helps the body fight infections, but if dc is uncomfortable it's appropriate to give medicine.
keep baby cool, strip down to vest&nappy, lots of cuddles and offer milk often.

nhs advice on how to treat a fever in children

PurpleDaisies · 25/03/2020 08:20

It’s totally fine to seek reassurance and advice from a medical professional if you’re worried about your child.
I would try your gp first. They’ll most likely give you a helpful phone consultation.

There’s some useful guidance here...

Don’t give ibuprofen though-the advice is to avoid with suspected coronavirus.

PurpleDaisies · 25/03/2020 08:22

Cross posted with wooden.

wooden just be careful posting that link because it says you can use ibuprofen. That’s not appropriate for fever linked to coronavirus.

Don’t give ibuprofen though-the advice is to avoid with suspected coronavirus.

this is a myth.

Needingsupportplease · 25/03/2020 08:23

Thankyou. Yeah I've read nhs guidance just worrying tbh never had anything like this apart from when she was born with sepsis and we had to stay at hosp which isn't helping my anxiety. I'm more concerned over feeling unsure when to act (when is temp too high/dangerous, where do we go with this corona stuff, I want to protect her from it but dont want to spread it if she has it)

wooden I agree that there’s no strong evidence, but the official advice is not to use ibuprofen. Paracetamol should be used instead.

From the nhs coronavirus website...

Dr, 111 or monitor???
Peanutbutteryogurt · 25/03/2020 08:33

Wooden, there's no evidence because there hasn't been time to do the study! In this case anecdotal evidence has been enough for the official advice to be to avoid ibuprofen.

Needingsupportplease · 25/03/2020 08:35

I haven't given ibuprofen anyway and wasnt really intending to... can the debate go elsewhere please

Needingsupportplease · 27/03/2020 14:09

Thankyou its heartbreaking shes just not with it and so quiet :( never seen her like this. Nights are shocking too, wakes every hour screaming

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 27/03/2020 15:04

Any chance it is ear related?

Needingsupportplease · 27/03/2020 15:07

She hasnt touched them at all so unsure hoping dr will check ears, throat and chest

What did the doctor say? Sending hugs it’s so hard when little ones are poorly. My son always gets a temperature when he cuts a new tooth! Every time. Hope your little one gets better really soon x

Needingsupportplease · 27/03/2020 17:41

She is teething but keep getting told that's not true (temp and teeth!) But its defo something more she looks awful. Dr thinks its viral and has given her some antibiotics and just said to keep temperature down for 24hours and if no better ring back (will be 111 as it's the weekend!) I feel so useless and exhausted 😞

My GP sent me this link, which is is useful and clear what0-18.nhs.uk/parentscarers/worried-your-child-unwell

PrivateD00r · 27/03/2020 18:00

They think its viral but gave antibiotics? This just sounds like a normal childhood illness, I really wouldn't worry Flowers

Smellbellina · 27/03/2020 18:03

Why have they given antibiotics if they think it’s viral?

Needingsupportplease · 27/03/2020 18:38

No idea but they have. I didnt even question just happy to try anything to be honest to make her better

Needingsupportplease · 27/03/2020 18:38
