How do you think life will change in the future?

Lots of people saying that life won't be the same again, things will change, won't go back to normal...ever? Please could you explain why you think that?

I must be very naive as I was thinking that once this is over in...6/12 months or whatever it will be, things would return to how they were before this...?

Things will go back to normal'ish in about a month when people realise they're about to get kicked out of their homes and will have to self-isolate on the streets.

Travel restrictions imposed by governments. Not just travel warnings but actual bans on going to countries that do not have covid 19 under control as governments realise the implications of having to deal with travellers returning from countries like this.
Less cruises. Possibly health checks when disembarking from boats and even planes.

Companies developing pandemic plans as they absorb the lessons from this. Same with the government

I hope there'll be a reduction in the vacuous celebrity culture and the political and social influence of the self obsessed will be reduced alongside a massive increase in respect and valuing those who actually hold society together. NHS staff, low paid workers currently keeping society going, those who work hard, carers and the rest - far too many to mention.
Let's teach our children to value hard work, being truthful, caring for others and respect.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 25/03/2020 10:38

It depends whether we have a 1918 govt or a 1945 govt. In 1918 there was a desire to get 'back' to normal. Keynes warned of the dangers and was ignored. In 1945, there was a desire to go forward and build a new society, with Keynes at the heart of the reforms.

Sunak sounds like a Keynsian, but his boss may be less keen. We could be headed to a new approach to the economy. Heathrow runway three knocked on the head forever and restrictions on flying. More teleworking and less communting. This could all make a major difference to our greenhouse gas emissions.

PlomBear · 25/03/2020 10:38

Life will go back to normal and people will continue being dickheads.

raisinyorkie · 25/03/2020 10:44

@purpleraingirl your assumptions is also incorrect, my husband is from an Eastern European country and he agrees with me, we have just discussed it and your post, he thinks your post is a ridiculous generalisation and doesn't find Scottish people to be that way at all.

PurpleRainGirl · 25/03/2020 10:52

@raisinyorkie There's absolutely no point in getting aggressive though. We can agree to disagree. You are not going to change our views and I don't intend to change yours. It's very simple: our experiences may have been different.

Hopefully people have the sense to stop farming and eating animals. Doing so has been proven to cause disease.

It’s a matter of time until an antibiotic resistant superbug takes over and then we really will be done for!

How do you think life will change in the future?
raisinyorkie · 25/03/2020 13:33

@purpleraingirl I'm not being aggressive, only pointing out the fact that you are making some major generalisations in your post. My point is that people are different irrespective of location and nationality and that it unfair and unkind to criticize the whole of the west based on your personal biases.

raisinyorkie · 25/03/2020 13:35

@purpleraingirl However lets not argue now no point. Hope you and your loved ones come through this unscathed!

SausageCrush · 25/03/2020 13:38

Taxes will go up.

SilverySurfer · 25/03/2020 13:44

I don't think much will change

Snowflakes will revert to being snowflakes
The self obsessed will remain so
Children will survive the horror of missing their end of school prom
MN will still be heavily left wing biased
Advanced Search still won't work although there is promise of a new system
The sun will still rise in the morning and go down at night

plus ça change

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/03/2020 13:47

I think Brexit will allow greater opportunities to attract new business. We may see a lowering of VAT and Corporation Tax to attract companies to the UK. I think we may see the start of automation / technology being used in public and private services in a big way.

feellikeanalien · 25/03/2020 13:48

I think after a while people will go back to how they were before.

I think there will have to be more austerity because of the massive government spending required to deal with the Coronavirus.

There will be steep increase in unemployment because of all the businesses which have gone bust.

The rich will do even more to protect their wealth.

Governments will retain more control over people's actions.

I would love to think that people will start to look out for each other more but human nature being as it is I am afraid that this is unlikely.

I hate feeling negative like this but sadly I feel that it is a fairly realistic assessment of the situation.

PurpleRainGirl · 25/03/2020 13:50

@raisinyorkie Same to you.

I'm really not being bitchy about everyone in the UK or the West, however it is true to say that over the years I have come across a significant number of people who would fall in the category which I've described. Upon further reflection, potentially more so in the recent years as we are more well-off now than we used to be thanks to hard work. But in truth, this sort of people were from all kinds of backgrounds, including my ex partner who was poor due to his own laziness to be blunt, and yet the most self-entitled person I've ever met, struggling with the smallest issues, on his high horse and criticising everything about EE as if we were a wild country with polar bears on the streets. This unfortunately, isn't an uncommon attitude in the UK as I've learnt having met his family and friends and reading the press. This kind of attitudes has caused me a lot of unnecessary grief over the years and perhaps made me more critical.

I'm definitely not arguing and in fact, I'd probably agree with you on a lot of points in RL as you speak your mind up and you sound down to earth.

NymphadoraBonks · 25/03/2020 13:53

People will use less loo roll.

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/03/2020 14:09

I think there will be a recession to get through because, although the government is offering some help to businesses, some sadly won't recover.

I do hope though that people will become less materialistic and realise that they don't need an awful lot of stuff.

I hope that the community spirit I am seeing in my area will continue.

People might be able to work from home more and avoid too much travel which will help to reduce the carbon footprint.

It's hard to say of course, but I hope there will be some positives to come out of this as well as the difficulties we are currently facing and continue to face.
