Why do people think dettol kills covid 19?

There is no evidence for that. It kills some corona viruses. The common cold.
The current evidence is that soap/ detergent and or bleach are the most effective things to clean with. Cheap and easily available.
We should be using the right stuff.

I've had my dettol surface spray for a few months now (bought a batch on special offer). Amongst many other things, it says on the back that it kills 'human coronavirus'. So it is there. I didn't believe it until I checked! Whether that includes Covid19, who knows?

Willow2017 · 24/03/2020 23:58

Whether that includes Covid19, who knows?

Well Dettol dont know either!

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 25/03/2020 00:05

What bleach solution is effective and do I need to wear gloves when i use it?

safariboot · 25/03/2020 00:07

Why do you think it doesn't?

If we're being technical, the virus strain is SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 is the disease it causes.

Dettol kills other viruses in the same family. It kills most things. It's not yet been tested against SARS-CoV-2 but it probably works.

But then so does washing up liquid. Or whatever other kitchen cleaner you normally use.

Dettol has had coronavirus on its wipes etc for ages, they didn’t add it because of this pandemic.

goingoverground · 25/03/2020 02:26

Some of their products have been proven to kill SARS and MERS, it would be likely that they are also effective against novel coronavirus:

But as we know soap is effective, that seems like a better solution.

If it did, didnt people think that health advisors would be recommending it or that hospitals would be using it?)

To be fair hospitals still need to kill more germs than just this virus. I believe dettol (or alcohol gel) do not kill norovirus hence not used in hospitals. I imagine this is why dettol can claim it kills 99.9% of bacteria/is anti-bacterial but cannot claim to be anti-viral, even though it kills some viruses.

I agree @goingoverground. I'd hazard a a guess that it does kill COVID-19, but that's my own estimation and my own lookout. Washing and soap and hot water all the same, but because of the lack of hand sanitiser available (haven't seen one since February and because I don't have a bottle of Poitín or moonshine over the 60% alcohol content, I wipe dettol on trolley handles).

I think Op, you are an example of the hysteria that is upsetting people e.g. Exactly. That is what I said. No evidence.

No evidence for or against the hypothesis that dettol can kill the Covid-19 virus, so why get so emotional about it. The evidence points to it being likely to do so. As the article states:
"However, Dettol products used against COVID-19 aren’t yet available for commercial testing. This will only happen following “the release of the strain by relevant health authorities”.

packetandtripe · 25/03/2020 23:09

Just to be clear I am only talking about the undiluted bottles of dettol, that you can't place directly on your skin.
