How are Sainsbury's/other supermarkets identifying disabled customers?

We really need food. I was thinking of going first thing, our Sainsbury's opens at 8 and first hour is priority for disabled, elderly and vulnerable.

Now before anyone lynches me I am disabled (Bipolar disorder) and one of our dc has ASD. I realise that going shopping is hard for everyone at the moment, but we are finding it impossible. Add to that trying to find the foods that dc will eat (sensory issues, no she won't just eat if she's hungry, she will literally starve herself)

I get PIP and Dd gets DLA, would that be enough? I could take our letters. What I mean is that I don't "look" disabled as such, and wonder if I'll be allowed in.

fuck knows, but I'm in the 12 week category and cannot get a single supermarket delivery slot from anyone.

BreathlessCommotion · 24/03/2020 22:04

@OhYouBadBadKitten it's awful isn't it. I have spent days constantly refreshing delivery pages. Is there anyone local who could get stuff for you? If you are in Yorkshire I'd be happy to (realise I probably seem like a weirdo in the internet)

Honestly? The supermarkets have been quieter in the afternoons.

BreathlessCommotion · 24/03/2020 22:07

Yes, but there isn't anything left. I've been. Apart from 2 days, I've been every day last week. Often to several. I've also tried all the small shops. No toilet roll, no milk, no bread, no eggs, no meat.

That's absolutely lovely of you Breathless. Really really kind, especially when you are finding it a nightmare. I wish you were closer then I'd be able to help with loo roll.

I am going to have to ask a friend to see if they can help.

Last week was crazy. Stock is improving now.

@BreathlessCommotion: DH has been going to the 1st hour shopping for disabled, elderly and vulnerable
since it was introduced.
He's my carer as I'm shielding at the moment.
No-one is likely to stop you or question you (unless to pitch up in the NHS staff slot).
Take your letters if it would give you more confidence, but in reality, you're unlikely to need them.
The supermarkets are depending on people not taking the p**s with this service and in our area, that does seem to be the case.
Good luck.

  • unless you pitch up to the protected NHS staff shopping slot.
