OH still going to work in a call center.

My OH is classed as a key worker in the broader spectrum , he is a team manager for an energy company, so proving gas and electric to people - so could work from home with laptop/headset etc , along with the rest of his office.

I am feeling quite concerned and slightly angry that they haven't shut yet and been told to work from home, he is still going into work, interacting with people and then coming back to me and our 2 year old DS

Any one else in the same situation ? I just thought all call center type places would have shut by now.

My husband works for the NHS but in finance management and is office based. They won’t let him work from home.

I work in a contact centre and we’re still open too. A few of us are working from home but others are stuck in the offices crammed together. No wonder this virus is spreading so fast.

It is incredibly annoying they won't let people WFH when they could because that is what the government said for employers and employees to do Angry

Same, both DH and I work in contact centres environments. DH actually is a key worker but I work in home insurance. Apparently that makes me an essential worker. Funny how none of the higher management have been in for over a week Angry

@Myfriendanxiety you would think the bloody NHS would know better. The advice can't be clearer. If you can you should be working from home

MiniMum97 · 24/03/2020 20:38

If you have the equipment to work from home personally I would just do it and tell them you are following government advice.

purpleme12 · 24/03/2020 20:41

I work in a call centre. All our offices are now shut and we're all working from home.
I never knew we had the ability to work from home till last week. I'm so thankful

My oh works in an EE call centre. A key worker apparently and he is still required at work despite being in the vulnerable category with 2 underlying conditions. I’m so disappointed in them as an employer. And angry.

Myfriendanxiety · 24/03/2020 21:06

@MiniMum97 tell me about it. There may be some aspects to the job that I don’t understand as he says it would be really difficult as they need to work together and are doing a lot of crisis management at the minute, but if they don’t need technical equipment I feel they should be at home with conference calling.

RandomMess · 24/03/2020 21:10

They are being short sighted as all the employees that are coming in are likely to catch COvid 19 sooner rather than later then be off sick for 14 days minimum.

Anyone that is in the "at risk" group can self isolate and claim sick pay - I thought that was that government implemented? The either pay sick pay for 12 weeks or let them WFH surely?

Cornettoninja · 24/03/2020 21:14

@myfriendanxiety - I’m in a similar position to your husband. I’ve been asking for home working for years and always been shut down.

Tbh I think there’s a pretty toxic ingrained historical culture in some trusts that over value presentism and has a general mistrust of technology. I queried plans for this a couple of weeks ago and was basically laughed at and dismissed by my management.

I’ve been isolated with dd fortunately but I know of people’s circumstances and there are people there who really shouldn’t be. Our offices have been reduced through other politics to tiny spaces where you can’t push out your chair without hitting the person behind you or a wall. There’s 13 people in my office which had less space than a small garage shop.

Insideout99 · 24/03/2020 21:20

If you're extremely vulnerable you can self isolate and get SSP. For vulnerable adults employers should set up home working and make reasonable adjustments where possible. Home working is not an option given by my OHs employer but they have offered more space between desks....

Some employers has sent home those in the vulnerable category on SSP which is fab.
