What would you say counts as caring for a vulnerable person?

So my DF has been having chemotherapy. Able to get around ok and take care of himself and is obviously self isolating. With the new guidelines about going shopping as little as possible I'm dropping shopping round but staying outside the window while he stays inside. I can see that it's starting to affect his mental health being alone and I'm thinking I should be popping over daily (remaining outside). WWYD? I don't have the space for him to move in with me unfortunately.

I'm thinking caring for someone's mental well-being is as important as going round to take care of any physical needs?

Hi could you phone and have a daily chat as another option to support them. It’s great that they have your support, you sound like a good friend. Take care

This is what DH is doing with his elderly Nan. We are the only local support she has so he’s goes round and they talk from a distance. She just needs the face to face interaction but she’s at high risk from a health and age perspective so distance is the safest option.

Sorry I meant you sound a supportive daughter. I think you are right about supporting mental health is important too. My mum is vulnerable and self isolating and I’m phoning daily between essential visits.

yearinyearout · 24/03/2020 19:39

I am phoning (in fact we are speaking several times a day), I just feel he would much prefer face to face even through a window, it's a low window so he can sit there with a cup of tea and there's just a pane of glass between us, me on the garden chair outside.

It would be hard enough even if he wasn't feeling rough from the treatment, this is making his recovery 100 times harder.

You can go in if you wash your hands and sit far apart. Mum and I sit in the garden wrapped in blankets so we can talk

A neighbour few doors down the road has a visitor every two days. They chat via upstairs window and the road. Yes, we get to hear their discussions but they seem ok. I’m not sure if we are allowed to do that, but they are practicing safe social distancing.

yearinyearout · 24/03/2020 19:53

I think I'm going to increase my visits. I'll stay outside while the weather is nice, obviously I wash my hands all the time anyway.

It's difficult, I understand why they have put all the restrictions in place due to people not observing the social distancing, so they've had to get more strict, but I've been doing strict social distancing for several weeks. I'm not taking any extra risks by going and sitting outside every other day than I would be by going once a week with shopping.

My dad is elderly vulnerable as he has COPD diabetes kidney problems and a few other things .
He’s been on lockdown for over 3 weeks at my request . So way before people were asked to He’s finally for once In his life behaving himself 😂
I am visiting him every day as usual
When I go in I go and wash my hands straight away and don’t touch anything.
I sit in the room but it’s huge ( sort of two big lounges in one) so I sit in the same chair each time well away from him and we chat watch tv and catch up .
I’ve told him to only use the same few cups and plates to limit any contamination
I do his shopping but I take it in and wipe it all down with sanatizer and I make sure he is stocked up with everything he needs.

Been doing his washing as well for him as well when I am there.

I’m taking as many precautions as I can with him but I know that if I didn’t visit him he would suffer massively as he lost his wife of 50 years last year so in a tough place .
He sits outside as well and get fresh air every day
I’ve made sure he has enough stuff to last him a month should I have to self isolate . Along with his prescription enough for 3 months .
He’s reasonably good with the internet and my my nieces and the rest of the family face time him every day to chat as well which he loves

I keep a packet of anti bac wipes in my bag so when I leave I use anti bac wipes to wipe down the door handle inside and outside
As a family we decided it was better that only one person dealt with my dad rather than different people and as I live 5 mins away and drive I was happy to do it .
