Nice guidelines about people with learning disability not being given ventilator

Has anyone else seen the NICE guidelines that suggest a person with a learning disability otherwise fit and healthy would be lower down the list than someone else without a learning disability who would get the ventilator?
It's disgusting

@CrapTVAddict where did you hear that?

sleepyhead · 24/03/2020 19:09

Where's that then? Because it doesn't mention people with learning disabilities in the critical care rapid guideline.

I was talking to a friend about this and Francesca Martinez has tweeted about it. IIRC, the guideline is about physical frailty in the elderly but people with disabilities were questioning what it might mean for them. I'll look for the link.

I can't link there is a post on Facebook and NICE have done a statement thing and MENCAP have done a statement too mentioning this

I think it's actually about the Clinical Frailty Scale - I gather from Francesca Martinez's tweet that the paragraph on not using the scale for younger people or those with learning difficulties is new.

MoMandaS · 24/03/2020 19:23

NICE have since clarified this so you're a bit out of date.

What?!?! My 6 year old has a learning disability (he's developmentally about 4 years old). Is he going to be lower priority if he needs hospital treatment?

CrapTVAddict · 24/03/2020 19:31

Where have they clarified it as I can't see anything.?

Nice guidelines about people with learning disability not being given ventilator
FromIbizaToTheNorfolkMaud · 24/03/2020 19:36

These are anxious times and I understand OP was concerned, but this seems to be turning into alarm and misinformation. As I understand it (and this comes secondhand from a friend whose child has disabilities) there is a clinical frailty scale for assessing frailty in old people. People with disabilities queried what this might mean for them and the guideline was amended to say it was not appropriate for younger people or those with learning disability or stable long term disability. Please see the link in my previous post.

FromIbizaToTheNorfolkMaud · 24/03/2020 19:37

As I understand it via Francesca Martinez, this paragraph is new:

Please note: **The CFS has not been widely validated in younger populations (below 65 years of age), or in those with learning disability. It may not perform as well in people with stable long term disability such as cerebral palsy, whose outcomes might be very different compared to older people with progressive disability. We would advise that the scale is not used in these groups. However, the guidance on holistic assessment to determine the likely risks and benefits of critical care support, and seeking critical care advice where there is uncertainty, is still relevant.
