supermarket shopping

i live very close to a supermarket. noticing that more shoppers are coming out with small half full bags than a trolley.

i haven't been shopping for 5 days now as i'm making do with what i bought on wednesday and generally am emptying the freezer and using up tins from eg 6 months to a year ago.

i am climbing the walls for chocolate and milk but we are making do with the uht soy milk i bought. we have no cheese or bread or wine and i'd love to just nip out and buy as it would be so easy for the kids' lunches.

i'm not going out until i need to do a larger quantity of shopping as i dont want to constantly in and out of shops.

is there any guidance on how often we should shop?

yes, i do need to get a life but im noticing people seem to be going for small amounts of things - appreciate that retail medicines like calpol/ sudafed and pain relief might be needed at short notice. i feel it defeats the point of shopping only when absolutely necessary.

again, appreciate front line workers like delivery drivers, carers, nhs works, police, ambulance need to pop in to get lunch etc but there still seems to be so many people walking to the supermarket that it doesnt seem like a proper lockdown.

anyone have any thoughts or want to shed any light about essential shopping and quantities?

We should be shopping as infrequently as possible. Writing a list and going once a week. Unfortunately, because shops are the only place we're allowed to go, people seem incapable of avoiding them. I have also seen a lot of people coming out with a few items or half a bag full.

onwheels · 24/03/2020 16:16

i think you're right, it's the one place people can still go so they are going.

I’m hoping to keep a supermarket visit to once a week, but with 5 adults under this roof, it would need to be a fairly big one.
I am planning to wait until Monday but worried that, as I will be getting pretty low by then, stocks still might be low on the shelves.

DentalPatient · 24/03/2020 16:20

Trouble is stocks are low and we are limited on the number of each item we can buy. I don’t think I would be able to do a who,e shop for the week for all four of us in one go.

onwheels · 24/03/2020 16:21

i understand Peaky, a lot of us are all home and many more meals and snacks to cover.

i'm just getting the feeling that people are popping out for wine, olives and kettle chips i.e one or two non- essential items if you get me. shopping is a big part of life!

I last did a big shop a wk ago- I am running out of things I can’t make do without ie milk with a toddler and bread. So I understand the top up mentality

onwheels · 24/03/2020 16:24

i know, it might be hard to get a reasonable amount to keep going for a week now everyone is staying at home. we will be eating things that we wouldn't normally and is sure is fooking annoying running low on fresh veg and dairy.

its just more people in shops, close proximity, surface transfer of virus etc i read in news today people still out in droves waiting for shops to open today

If you need to shop shop , make a list and get you need for so long . Don't watch people and get annoyed perhaps they couldn't get everything. I went for cat food , milk and bread I need those things I can't go without and I got other stuff to .
I'm not policing what people shop now , keep your distance and wash your hands afterwards.

ilovecakeandwine · 24/03/2020 16:27

I suppose it's because we didn't get any notice either so people went out today to shop , tomorrow will be quieter .
Where I live the supermarket was quiet but I'm used to a Saturday .

iwanttoshakesomeppl · 24/03/2020 16:28

I did a big shop two weeks ago and got another one ordered for next week. For anything fresh I'm using the little local shops I can walk too.

onwheels · 24/03/2020 16:28

no fair enough ilovecake. is anyone just making do though? i have enough food but just not the food i want Grin

i mean, would i be judged for going out just to get wine, posh cheese and a multipack of creme eggs? i also could do with a loaf of bread for lunch time and cow milk would be nice.

ilovecakeandwine · 24/03/2020 16:34

Well I'm not going to judge you but most probably on here someone will be .
I wouldn't go out just for a bottle of wine but essentials yes and if a bottle of wine happened to fall in my trolley I see no harm .

SilverPepperOfTheStars · 24/03/2020 16:35

I got my Tesco delivery today. It's missing basic things like bread and milk that I'd ordered for my elderly neighbours. I'll be heading out tomorrow to try and find those things, so I'll be one of those people with just a couple of bags.

onwheels · 24/03/2020 16:36

Grin i will wait until i need a larger amount but it's hard.

i'm usually an "every other day" shopper as a result of living so close to the supermarket and unorganised.

I’m waiting until Thursday/Friday when I’ll need bread and milk. Will be going somewhere that sells wine also!! Probably gin as well.

AlphaJura · 24/03/2020 17:59

Well it's a hard one because on one hand people are saying shop as infrequently as possible. On the other, you get accused of stockpiling and being selfish for getting more than a basketful. So I think people are wary of that. Plus some people have big families and everyone including kids are at home. I've got all the essentials but I've got 3 dc including a toddler, One teenage boy and 11 yo dd. Plus dh. They get hungry. I buy snacks but being at home and bored, they seem to decimate the lot. (I do try hiding it). I tried to get enough top up stuff to last 2 days today. The store I went to was fairly quiet and people were keeping their distance. I certainly didn't go for something to do, id rather not. I was worried about going out there!
