Where did all these joggers bumping into everyone come from?

Out walking my dog at 8.30am (park is shut until further notice) and on a small quiet road there were 22+ joggers all almost bumping into each other, almost went into me / my dog despite trying to keep out their way.

I am out with my dog every day and even in the park there is usually no more than 2 lone joggers at any one time. Where have all these people come from??? Again I repeat... I am out everyday and there are never this many people even in the park. I feel bad for people who do jog daily and dog walkers or people who have no option but to have a little walk outside as they can't elsewhere. These people were jogging in pairs and taking up all the room on the pavement. I understand that they may be following the guidelines given last night (one outing for exercise per day) but it just seemed crazy how so many came out at once!

Funny thing is that I saw less dog walkers than normal but more joggers lol!

Italy limited outdoor exercising privileges to being 200m from your home max, at this rate I won't be too surprised if it happens here.

Exercising is super important especially at a time where most will be stuck at home, but the newbies could possibly try to workout at home? I have no garden, but I luckily have a skipping rope and will be doing some bodyweight youtube workouts for an hour a day to get my fix... and I'm used to going to the gym 4 times a week lifting fairly heavy weights which I will miss Sad .

Ok so everyone is now at home, stuck indoors... surely that's why you are seeing more people out? Maybe people walk to work, walk on their lunch, walk to school.

You have no more right to be out there jogging than someone else.

‘ but there are 20+ meeting up for a run together?!‘

That’s not what OP said. She said that at a time she’d normally only see a couple, she saw a total of over 20 (not a group of 20) some of whom were too close

It’ll be because

  • gyms are closed
  • they're using the time they would otherwise have spent commuting before they WFH
  • they’re using these weeks to bed in new healthier habits
  • they thought that going early would mean it would be quiet (this is first day of stricter restrictions - no one really knows what it’ll be like)

It’s because the gyms are closed. I normally exercise there for 6-7 hours a week. Suddenly I’ve got to change the plans.

I have been running but as of tonight I’m not going any more- my run route was way too busy and it made me feel really uneasy. Home workouts from now on.

I must say, it’s ironic when people try to shame others for being out of the house like this, as you’re part of the exact same problem yourself. Essentially it’s perfectly okay for you to be out of the house, in that place, at that current moment, but not others? Are you somehow not contributing to the overall footfall of people then?

The government advice is to stay home, essential trips only. Realistically walking the dog or going for a jog isn’t “essential” enough to risk mass infection, so if there are issues with people taking the piss then the privilege will be taken away. They will just impose stricter restrictions which will be to the detriment of everyone.

I find 930 now the quietest time to go out. Earlier than that, everyone is desperately trying to fit in "exercise". A month ago 10am was quite a.busy.time for dog walkers to be in parks (owner walkers I mean) but now it much the least crowded time, cos of all the other (valid) exercisers early, lunchtime and late afternoon. And all the children also needing exercise by midday.

930to 10best time to get out if you can fit it, of course lots cannot do that time, which is why ifnyou can, go then.

mumoffluffs · 24/03/2020 17:33

@browzingss I totally agree with everything you have said!

Again, just concerned about the close encounters and everyone bumping into each other so much. I will be attempting to go at a quieter time as @Nettleskeins has mentioned so I can be responsible as possible and reduce footfall myself.

Despite me trying to stay out of everyone's way there were careless people barging their way through others which is not fair and dangerous at the best of times.

Yes, these selfish idiots will ruin it for the rest of us!

Unlike other EU countries, we don’t have many police officers. Therefore I don’t think we’d even be able to have a 200m rule because we don’t have enough officers to enforce it? So it might just end up being a complete ban on walks/exerciseSad

I agree that it’s because gyms and parks are now closed. Lots of people use work gyms and now can’t.

I also don’t see the issue in people jogging close together if they are couple who presumably share a bed at home.
