So Boris wants us to have food delivered to the home but how when then aren't any slots?

I usually get home food deliveries. I made my last order two weeks ago (Tesco) as that was the first slot available and thankfully got a delivery today. However, I have been trying to book my next home delivery for at least a week, knowing that the wait times were long. Not only have I been able to get a slot on Tesco, but I couldn't on several other online retailers either (and I am already registered as a customer on these sites). I have tried the alternative of click and collect but all these slots are booked up too. No further slots for future dates seem to be being released either. I am therefore, wondering how on earth Boris thinks we can continue to have our food delivered to the home? I am also wondering if the govt is preparing for distribution of food on rations from hubs because no further slots are being released from any online retailer as far as I can tell.

I got a magic slot after trying for a week. Did my order but when I got to pay get a 'not valid townor city'

I have no clue

I must admit I said the same when I listened to the announcement last night but to be fair to him he can’t change the fact that delivery drivers can only do so much in a day. The supermarkets are advertising for more drivers but again, they will have a limited amount of vehicles.

Same here - trying to get a slot for elderly mother, care agency won't shop for her as 'we expect families to do that', can't register with sainsburys (no new customers). A whole bunch of people have suddenly been told to stay home and somehow get provided for! Thank heavens for helpful neighbours, but they can only do so much.

yumscrumfatbum · 24/03/2020 12:08

Many wholesalers are offering their goods to the general public. I have been able to order a fruit, veg and butchery box. It does have to be collected but I have found a neighbour to do this for me

FanSpamTastic · 24/03/2020 12:08

I think they need to change the way they organise deliveries.

They should divide up areas into days and blitz each area. So if you live in an area you get advised your delivery day is Monday etc - that way they could probably service more people than driving backwards and forwards all the time.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 24/03/2020 12:35

So if you live in an area you get advised your delivery day is Monday etc

And the best of luck with that if you are a key worker, probably working double shifts!

I think they need to somehow prioritise the vulnerable and elderly.

Been trying to get deliveries for my elderly parents who are apart and live in remote areas, hundreds of miles from me, can't get anything, meal delivery services also not accepting orders.

Contacted local charities to them and no reply.

They will have to go out to shops and they are the ones really meant to be at home.

Boris was on about food parcels but they haven't heard anything, think maybe for the vulnerable ill groups perhaps

use local farm shops like we are. they do deliveries. Also local restaurants are switching to take aways.

Homeschool101 · 24/03/2020 13:05

Look on social media and/or ask around, plenty of other non-supermarket options for deliveries.
If you can afford to, leave the supermarket slots for those who can't afford farm shop prices.

Petiolaris · 24/03/2020 13:06

I had a slot today. I ordered for myself, both parents and two of my neighbours. Obviously that’s equivalent to five orders so it took five times as long to pick and took up five times as much space on the van. So not really a solution. My neighbour has a slot next week and we’re all chucking stuff into the basket.

bilbodog · 24/03/2020 13:07

Waitrose advised me that delivery slots should be reserved for those who cannot get out at all due to being ill/in isolation and has asked its usual customers to shop in store instead which i will be doing as long as i can.

daisychain01 · 24/03/2020 13:22

None of the supermarkets were prepared for the volume of activity. Whereas a typical Christmas they start preparing for increased volumes in Sept, this is like 3 Christmases with 4 weeks to prepare.

As more people are redeployed to cover the priority high volume activities such as deliveries, making up orders, and just getting more stock into the stores, it will find a level where more delivery slots become available.

I admit I haven't used on-line shopping especially not atm as I keep thinking it's best to leave it for people who don't have a car or in a vulnerable category, but I expect it will soon become a lot easier. We do have very resilient supply chains in U.K.

@OrangeBlossom78, I managed to get hold of someone at my aunt’s church who contacted a local volunteer group. Even if they aren’t church goers, could you try the local churches?

Squiffy01 · 24/03/2020 13:51

Yep this is where I am at the moment.
I’m in the vulnerable group and supposed to never leave my house if have contact with anyone in my house (tell that to my 18 month old). Yet Ocado’s website has gone to pot and can’t get a delivery slot.
We are ok for now as I have always batch cooked but a week max and I am screwed husband and child fine cause we have a few tins of beans I can attempt to make something with but I’m on a very strict diet from my medical team and not allowed to eat any fruit of veg. At least I will lose some weight.

NathanNathan · 24/03/2020 13:54

How are people finding out about who locally will deliver in terms of wholesalers butchers etc?

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 24/03/2020 14:02

Our local independent stores are doing deliveries, and so are farm shops.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 24/03/2020 14:03

@NathanNathan

Facebook, local pages and groups and also if you follow any local businesses.

Orangeblossom78 · 24/03/2020 15:17

No-one from church available, just rang them and off to town on the bus to get groceries and local shops etc...tricky, maybe something will happen soon to help the elderly more.
