To think if we can't trust NHS staff to follow the rules...

My best friend of very many years is a nurse at a major hospital A&E. She works two shifts a week after having her two children and has obviously been busy working this week.

However, I am furious to find that she has sent her two children into nursery for their two days this week because her husband 'can't work from home' whilst having to look after the children. He works in computer games. And she's asking him to look after his children for 2 days a week so she can go and work on the front line.

She thinks this is entirely justified as the spaces are open to her and her husband out earns her by about 4 times and if she stayed at home with them the NHS would lose a nurse. I am a teacher. Those spaces are for emergency childcare only. Every child who comes into school is risking the health of me and every other child there. Those places are NOT for lazy arse husbands who cannot be bothered to move their working day to later in the evening or a day at the weekend instead because they don't want to look after the children they created.

Am I being unreasonable to be so angry?! If nurses are flouting the rules what hope have we got for everyone else?!

it's being reported here that people are being mugged for their NHS passes, so be careful about wearing it in public

Yes, I've heard this - unbelievable. What I will say is, I'm not in the best mood for anyone to try that Wink

This is bringing out the most hideous side of human nature in the UK, judging, blaming, panic buying - horrible.

pickletickled · 24/03/2020 13:53

What a selfish prick OP
risking your own dc life as well as others.
I'm wondering why your friend hasn't just said to her dh - dc aren't going they're staying home with you.
It's 2 days!
She of all people knows the severity of this situation and needs to get him told.

DH and I have also had this discussion for if I am working and he is home. He is on call at the moment even if he isn't in work. Whilst previously it was agreed the children could go in anyway if he was off (by their school), we have agreed that if he gets called in, he will ring the school and drop them off on his way out. It might add 10 minutes to his journey, but it is the sensible thing to do.

I’m a nurse and I’m seriously thinking about resigning due to the childcare situation. I’m part time and earn less than 5% of DH. I think on balance it’s before for the majority of people that she works and takes up a childcare place, rather than not work at all.

It’s really stressful.

mummabubs · 24/03/2020 14:16

DH and I both work in the NHS and have a 2.5 year old DS. As of this week we're now working from home, so we've kept DS with us. It's a pain in the ass and we're both struggling to get work done and entertain DS (in our tiny home with no outdoor space compared to his massive premium nursery which offered us a keyworker place), however if we want to limit virus spread then we have to follow the rules and have our child at home if one of us is at home working. Your friend's husband sounds like the problem OP. I'm sure if we cna do it then he can too!

Is there anyone to report people to who aren't filling the guidelines?

I know somebody who’s a single parent and works 16 hours as a care assistant yet is sending her two to school every day of the week. And yes I do “know her situation” cos she’s my partners sister. Dropped her kids down the school yesterday then came home to chill. Hope she’s challenged by the school soon. Cheeky and lazy.

KaptenKrusty · 24/03/2020 14:40

how about you just focus on your own life and stay home and do your own thing and just stay out of everyone else's business

HeIenaDove · 24/03/2020 14:45

This is the second thread ive seen on this board where a man cant be arsed to look after his own child in this situation.

Jerseygaly · 24/03/2020 14:53

Unfortunately it is everyone s business because
That nurse is increasing the risk to overpayments as
She might catch vivid from her asymptomatic kids
So be spreading it before she has symptoms
Or she catches it at work like at least 3 other nurses and gives it to her kids and all at nursery and the staff too.I

Or whilst she is off sick for any reason there severe nhs staff.
Obviously where both parents are the staff there is no other choice

vera99 · 24/03/2020 15:09

@turkeyontheplate I would give frontline NHS workers the absolute get out of jail card for almost anything at the moment. They are risking their lives for us and someone can be bothered to moan about petty shit at a time like this. Unbelievable.

Italiandreams · 24/03/2020 15:12

I know lots of teachers whose partners are taking unpaid leave to enable them to work. They do so because it is the right thing to do but stories like this make my blood boil.

Bulb1976 · 24/03/2020 15:18

I can’t take anymore. I despair at my own people, who I once thought were better than anyone.

Itsnotthatcomplicated · 24/03/2020 15:25

how about you just focus on your own life and stay home and do your own thing and just stay out of everyone else's business

It is everyone's business. Because people like this dick, are increasing the risk for everyone.

Every person who is sending their kids to school when they absolutely do not need to, is making in dangerous to everyone else.

lexi873 · 24/03/2020 15:29

I don’t think you’d be telling me to mind my own business if it was your Nan or Grandad in the care home who caught this virus because a carer who only needed to send their kids to childcare two days max was sending them for five so she can sit on her bum in peace for the rest of the week!
We are all supposed to be in this together doing our bit to contain and slow the spread so yes it is everybody’s business!

stairway · 24/03/2020 15:33

If her husband can’t work around the kids and his wage pays the bills maybe she should just quit then she won’t be at risk of infecting herself or her family.

Kuponut · 24/03/2020 15:38

Our Head rang round the families who'd said they had one key worker parent to see if they really needed to take up a place - most said no, some still had reasons to need to - and a few were downright abusive to her.

We could technically have used it - and my mental health is tanking like mad with it all and could have used the facility - as DH works in one of the specified roles, but have done the right thing and have them at home.
