Just that really. Every move in this crisis seems more about making money othan saving money than our actual health. Wanting more staff in than necessary, all but closing when they thought it would be too expensive to keep us, then when they naively think government is going to pay staff instruct us all to come back to work. I've told them my family come first and taking unpaid leave but still half expecting them to try to say I have no choice once I come out if isolation. This crisis is bringing out the worst in some employers. Think its time to find a new job after this is all over.

As long as that doesn’t affect my mum I don’t care!

Righteouswarrior · 24/03/2020 13:53

My work has said they intend to claim from government for wages too, whilst my colleagues continue to work.

Same here. I’ve started job hunting and taking note of which companies will be getting my custom after all this is over.

EvilPea · 25/03/2020 10:46

Motor repairs needs to stay open though, people are travelling less but their cars are more important so they need to be kept on the road. Hence the new mot exemption. Part of that is parts.

What’s safer your own car or a bus or Uber.

Itsnotthatcomplicated · 25/03/2020 11:39

Yes auto parts need to be available.

No all their staff need be classed as key workers

That's the issue. Companies are heating they can stay open and trying to run business as usual. Most of them could make adjustments for at least some of their staff. But arent.

IWantT0BreakFree · 25/03/2020 18:31

@kittykat7210 OK. I was just trying to make you feel slightly better 🤷🏼‍♀️

@JollyGiraffe12 completely agree. There is a growing list of companies who will never again receive a penny from me (and my family would tell you that once I've decided on a boycott, it's set in stone). Likewise there are other companies that I will always try and use in the future because of the way they have prioritised the lives of not just their staff but the whole of society, before lining the pockets of the execs.

Bloke23 · 25/03/2020 18:52

Ive worked for my company for 5 years, they will keep us running because of a loophole about being key workers! We are based in north essex and we are still getting temps in from london, they changed our sick pay from full pay to ssp! People are still working shoulder to shoulder, no social distancing! Got home from work today, my wife has spoke to her mum, she and her husband wre very well off and they are willing to support us!

So fuck them, tomorrow morning they will be getting a phone call to say i quit and wont be returning, they aint getting no notice period off me, fuck them

Bloke23 · 25/03/2020 18:55

Forgot to put that im in the high risk group

JKScot4 · 25/03/2020 18:57

Also showing the selfishness of people too, my DD works for a well known insurer and as of today is working from home; it’s been a massive task for their IT dept to set up.
Yet they have people when they get through moaning about the time they waited to get through!!!
Don’t think they realise ppl are still commuting to answer their feckin calls.

kittykat7210 · 25/03/2020 19:00

@IWantT0BreakFree I didn’t mean that in a rude way! I just don’t want that to come up against my mum and my mum get in trouble for something her boss did! I meant it more that I don’t care if he gets in trouble because he deserves it, not that I didn’t card about the information you were giving me because I do and I thank you for it!

Oblomov20 · 25/03/2020 19:16

Think this has happened to lots of people. You see someone's true colours.

NothingIsWrong · 25/03/2020 19:22

You can't claim the 80% if people are still working? My husband runs a small company and has 5 staff. He's having to furlough 2 of them, and he was having a chat with his accountant today about it - he said "I know once I furlough them they can do nothing work related, but am I allowed to phone them to check if they are OK?" Accountant though this "might" be acceptable...

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 25/03/2020 19:25

Boss has said he’ll apply for the 80% government thing but that he expects them all to carry on working from home whilst only being paid 80%. ?
I would contact HMRC and report him. That is absolutely not the purpose of the grant. One of the rules is that employees must NOT be doing any work for the company in order for the employer to claim the grant.

NemophilistRebel · 25/03/2020 19:26

I’m on maternity leave (just) and after the way my company has treated their staff during this pandemic I told my boss today that it has made me reconsider if I’d even want to work for them when I’m due back

Just pushing for their pound of flesh still

Hannah021 · 25/03/2020 19:30

Yeah some ppl are nasty, i'll look elsewhere
my manager sends us funny daily emails with hilarious vote options of where we are checking up on us... It is the only thing i look forward to in this lonely place!
So dont bother with a place you have 0 loyalty for... Not worth it... Plenty of good ppl out there

WelcomeToTheMountaintop · 25/03/2020 19:38

My employees has been brilliant. Public sector, but could (should?) be considered essential. They could make us go in.

But instead they had an utterly epic IT push, and bundled everybody off to WFH where actually possible. I’m so appreciative of them.

I grumble at times, their wages for my role are around 1/3 below the market rates, and I do threaten to leave occasionally, and half heartedly job hunt. But then I look at my work/life balance, and how they are treating us now. And I know I’ll stay. They have more than earned my loyalty.

But like many others here. I’m watching. I know what businesses are treating their employees badly. And I will remember.

fedupwithemployer · 25/03/2020 19:44

My employer has been next to useless and really shown their true colours. Making people come in when at risk and thinking it's all an over reaction.

Final nail in the coffin, they want to 'furlough' me, claim the 80% but told me to still work. They're doing it with a few others, but I'm the only one that knows (I have to as I pay the wages). I feel sick to my stomach about it. I want to report them, but I need my job to pay the bills. Just don't know what to do.

Unescorted · 25/03/2020 19:53

My employer has been amazing. We are all wfh. We get a daily update that explicitly says the employee, family and friends come first - it is a thing now to have your kids or partners photo bomb conference calls and show off comedic below the desk garments we are told do the best you can in the circumstances - no one is keeping tabs. Make sure you give yourself an hour for lunch, check in with colleagues to make sure they are Ok. They have got us mental health counselling if we want it. And they automatically paid us extra to cover out increased heating bills. For those with season ticket loans they have contacted our train companies and arranged to have our season tickets suspended for the duration.

They could not have been more helpful. And it has paid off for them - they now have a really engaged loyal workforce.

StormzyinaTCup · 25/03/2020 20:00

Yup, my employer said this last week so I will be looking for a new job as soon as we have come through the other side. Always has been selfish and greedy but that's a whole new level of selfish and greedy. Not interested in working for anyone who sees fit to try and profiteer from this crisis.

I would contact HMRC and report him

And I will be doing this too ^^

Itsnotthatcomplicated · 25/03/2020 20:08

Lots of employers believe they can claim the 80% to remain open.

I think they are thinking that if theres not enough work to pay peoples wages and they would have to close the doors, permenantly, then can get 80% to keep the doors open.

I cant imagine them being able to claim it, keep the doors open and demand people work fulltime without, stopping wages up. Even if the government decide they can claim it, in order to remain open. Which is unlikely.

MortyFide · 25/03/2020 20:20

I've been really loathing my job lately, for a variety of reasons - mainly a matter of pride and feeling devalued - and have been desperately searching for a new one so I can make my bid for freedom.

But in the last week or so my employers have absolutely surpassed themselves. They have set up new systems, ordered thousands of pounds worth of new equipment to enable office based staff to work at home, set up communications and training so everyone knows how to use the new equipment and the new systems, set up internal chats and silly groups for us to play games between teams whilst we're all stuck at home, and encouraged us all to put health and family first. At the same time there has been inspiring emails about how this is a new opportunity for us to stay productive and revolutionise the business when we get into the "brave new world" (bit wanky but actually they are dead right, this could change how we do everything).

This is a smallish consultancy firm, publicly listed but with about 300 employees. I've always known deep down that they're a good employer, but I was so cross about my role and the casual sexism in senior management that makes me burn with resentment, that I'd lost sight of that. Their staff turnover is also incredibly low, so they're doing something right.

I feel quite humbled by how they've stepped up and have vowed to stop whining and appreciate the fact that I have a job and I'm getting paid so I can still pay the mortgage, and that my employer does value us as a workforce (if not me as an individual - and a woman).

I think they already had a loyal workforce, but even more so now.
