Sore throat - paranoid - do I go to work?

One side of my throat is hurting and my nose is slightly blocked from being a little runny. Since last night.

Do I go to work?

Ordinarily of course I would as I feel fine but I am not sure what this sore throat means - what if it is the beginning of this damn virus?

I really want to go to work and I also have a job interview somewhere this afternoon which I really don’t want to miss but I really don’t want to infect anyone Sad.

No you must stay at home and self isolate along with everyone in your household.

lightnesspixie · 24/03/2020 06:01

No. Self isolate

Helpmechangemymindsetplease · 24/03/2020 06:02

I know the government has advised to stay at home with a continuous cough and/or a temperature but I have been reading that a sore throat can also be one of the symptoms.

I really don’t want to hurt any of the lovely people I have been working with (am temping) Sad.

There was a thread on this literally two days ago where someone’s DD had a sore throat and was wondering if she should call in sick and self isolate. I was shocked by the number of posters saying she should go in. Stay home OP.

Littlepond · 24/03/2020 06:06

No. Stay home.

Littlepond · 24/03/2020 06:08

Sorry just read the bit about your interview - my reply was a bit abrupt - could you contact them and explain you are self isolating and request a phone or video interview?

FedUpWithThisToday · 24/03/2020 06:34

No - I had a sore throat and runny nose, later turned to fever then cough etc.. I've probably had coronavirus but it started only with a sore throat and runny nose.

littlemissmuffins · 24/03/2020 06:42

FedUpWithThisToday May I ask how long it took for your first signs of a sore throat to turn into fever etc?? I've had a tickly throat for days

Helpmechangemymindsetplease · 24/03/2020 06:52

I am not going in.

My next question is - if it turns out to be literally nothing - a mild sore throat that goes away in a day, no other symptoms, can I go back to work? Because at the moment it feels like nothing and I am just being cautious.

No you can't. You must stay self isolated foe either 7 or 14 days.

EL8888 · 24/03/2020 06:56

Another no from me. My throat is so sore -it woke up early today as it’s so bad

SinkGirl · 24/03/2020 07:02

I had a sore throat when the first SI measures came in but it wasn’t being considered a symptom then. I stayed home anyway, but at that point it was probably overkill. I have a cold now (bunged up nose but no cough or fever) so it was probably that but better safe than sorry.

I expect most interviews will be postponed now unless it’s for something needing an immediate start - contact them and say you’re self isolating, you may be able to do it via other means

Stay at home. My son was coughing last week and had a sore throat, so we did 111 and told us to self isolate. Happened to speak to our doctor about something else and she said totally it can be a symptom and to self isolate for 14 days. Hope you feel better. x

cinammonbuns · 24/03/2020 07:11

I’m confused I thought it was just cough or fever that you self isolate for.

winniesanderson · 24/03/2020 07:34

@cinammonbuns that is what is advised yes. And is or at least was the official nhs advice last Thursday when I was deciding if I should keep one of my dcs off school with a sore throat. I did in the end.
But there are apparently a whole ream of symptoms that can go alongside a cough/temperature. I was in work over 2 weeks ago with some of these symptoms because at the time they were saying a dry cough and a temperature. My cough was actually more productive. Though has turned to a dry cough now. I don't know if I had covid or just a cold. But I wish I'd paid less attention to the official symptoms and stayed home anyway.

I have a sore throat, headache and earache so am self-isolating for 14 days.

I might not have the virus at all and I feel as if I am skiving, but I guess these are not normal times! Normally I would just medicine up and go to work.
