Given hardware stores are considered essential my guess is that we will see the masses heading for B&Q to stock up on items for "home projects" they can do during lockdown.

Completely missing the point that the reason they can remain open is to provide supplies to key workers like plumbers to fix leaks that unless fixed would prevent people staying in their home.

I've also got a feeling that we will see people having daily "essential" trips to the supermarket to get out and about.

I still don't think some people are taking this seriously.....

Unfortunately Parkhead that is probably pushing it.

Hopefully they (the government) will come up with more clarification tomorrow.

Titsywoo · 24/03/2020 07:56

Michael Gove apparently just said on tv that visits to allotments are allowed

Fedupandpoor · 24/03/2020 08:01

Greece had this problem. They flooded the bars and cafes so the government closed them. The beaches got crowded so they put police patrols to clear people away. Then they headed to the mountains. Now everyone is off to the islands to spread virus to communities with only one small hospital for an entire island. You couldn't make it up.

Fluffiest · 24/03/2020 11:23

"I'm going to just stick to a weekly big shop on Tuesdays"

But why? You are supposed to be changing your behaviour. Get your essential items and then go home and stay there.*

I am changing my behaviour, I'm not doing one big shop a week and then several little ones for bits and pieces when I fancy. Sorry, for not making that clear. There's no delivery slots available around me and I'd rather someone more vulnerable than I, use the delivery slots anyway.

Squashpocket · 24/03/2020 11:38

@crustycrab if we're supposed to only go out to the supermarkets as little as possible and we're also not allowed to do a weekly shop, what are supposed to do? Genuine question, because I don't understand.

ffswhatnext · 24/03/2020 12:10

There haven't been slots for weeks. I've been trying. Still nothing for the foreseeable future. I'm in the at-risk category. So are some of my neighbours, along with key workers.

About 10 days ago, people who live in my block got together. First one of us to get a slot, we will shop for everyone as much as possible, without getting the slot cancelled. There will be things that we will need to split, but it's better than nothing,

There's also a whatsapp and facebook group. Anybody got any spare? Is anyone going to shop?

Those going shop, they can only carry so much. Last week not everyone had the money for a weeks shop. Some should be doing their monthly shop this week, and needing top-ups.

Shop arrangements, of course, it's hard to trust people you don't essentially know. Those are requested on the groups, no private requests (unless you trust them). Then some money transferred straight over, to cover goods. But by the time it should arrive on your door, the balance needs to be paid.

It's really nice seeing a community coming together, whilst still socially distancing.

It's really quiet here. Normally heaving with people and traffic, If it was the holidays/weekend, it would be normal to hear the kids outside playing. Come to think of it, if they were in school, would be hearing them now.

I would love the quietness to be the result of people listening. It's not. This area is very popular with those who work in the City, who stay here during the week. They've shipped out. I know of at least one family who has taken CV with them. Before they left they were around me, when they left they knew I had CV. The very responsible people during their 6-hour car journey made several stops.

I'm completely baffled by people having ago at others for going to their allotments. The fact that some people are able to eat food they have grown themselves leaves more food for everyone else. I'm sure it counts as exercise, and it's exercise that has a valuable point to it.

PS - I don't have my own allotment, but I wish I did. My exercise at the moment is sorting out my garden so that I can grow as much fruit and veg as I can this year and let the flowers take a back seat.

The one thing I hope we can all take from this disaster is the importance of growing more food here in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland, and a greater appreciation of how food is provided to us. Once we get coronavirus out of the way, we need to move on to deal with climate change - and we need to do that very quickly.

ffswhatnext · 24/03/2020 12:39

My memory of allotments was there was lots of chatter, swapping produce and social distancing "what a crock of mumbo jumbo shite."

I gave mine up. Gardening was advised for my MH. Something quiet, I was told. Somewhere I can get lost in my thoughts, I was told. I quite liked the idea, and grow whatever I can at home, no garden.

Peace and quiet? haha. Even when I had my headphones on, people wanted to talk ffs. Hated having to give it up, but unless I went after dark, there was the small talk and lots of assumptions because I was new, I didn't have a clue. Lots of standing around chatting to each other.

ilovecakeandwine · 24/03/2020 12:46

We've been told not to panic buy so I haven't but for 2 weeks I've struggled to get everything on my weekly shop therefore going again a couple of days later . Today lockdown , already planned to go to supermarket as ran out of cat food / milk etc but couldn't get any coffee / eggs at Lidl and I didn't feel the need to go elsewhere I can manage without coffee . I do normally like looking at the clothes in supermarkets but today I feel so down and tbh I just wanted to get out of there ASAP .

crustycrab · 24/03/2020 14:48

You don't need to shop every bloody week. Honestly, 14 days worth of essential items isn't that much. Stop consuming so much. Learn what "essential" and "necessary" actually mean

RagamuffinCat · 24/03/2020 15:01

They are all in the supermarkets (I work in one). A colleague saw a lady let her toddler stand licking the glass today, and when told not to, said "but she's just a baby". In the middle of a global pandemic. I have lost count of the number of people who have coughed near me, and who have grabbed hold of my arms and hands to talk to me in the past four days. No one is respecting the 6ft recommendation. At last count we had nearly 20 colleagues off sick with symptoms, many of them who are in the social distancing group due to underlying conditions, who still have to come to work with the public. I can only see it getting worse unless tighter restrictions are bought in.

steppemum · 24/03/2020 15:08

I will be going to DIY stores if I need to,

right, becuase when you were told STAY AT HOME, you obviously thought, Oh that's ok, I don't need to stay at home, that onlybapplies to other people.

It means what it says. Stay. At. Home.
no popping out to the DIY shop. If you can't repaint, well tough. better to be alive with tatty paint, than dead. But it won't be YOU dead, it wll be some other poor sod who got it because we didn't all STAY AT HOME

steppemum · 24/03/2020 15:17

I have a family of 5 with 3 teens.
We get through a lot of food when we are all at home.
And there is a limit to the fridge /freezer space.

So, yes, I do shop every week, for bread/milk and fresh fruit veg.

Of course I don't need to shop every week for flour, pasta, tins of beans etc, I could buy lots of those and stock up.....
Oh..wait...

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 24/03/2020 15:25

I don't understand what is wrong with a weekly shop? I can't physically carry more than that and we don't have a car. I'm getting fruit and veg delivered and we're currently isolating, ten days to go, so will use up a lot of our store cupboard. Will probably have to do two shops in a week to get ready for next potential isolation as. I've no idea if the baby has the virus or just a cold and temperature.

ralphi · 24/03/2020 15:29

Probably round to my mum‘s house who is still welcoming visitors daily, despite being 82. She is loving silver hour at the local supermarket too, and goes nearly every day. She keeps telling me not to be „so silly“ when I voice concerns.....

ilovecakeandwine · 24/03/2020 15:53

Who the hell do you think you are saying how often anyone can shop for , Some people go everyday but if they pick a quiet time so what !!
I'm getting sick of all this judging it's ridiculous we can leave to shop and if we need something we can get it I will try and go without but if I run out of cat food and like today there wasn't much cat food in I'll need to go again in a few days . We've been told not to stock up and I wouldn't buy enough bread for 14 dads to let another family go without I'd just get what I need then go again in a few days .
You go off and polish your halo and I'm going to carry on .

maadlady · 24/03/2020 15:59

@steppemum fighting a losing battle with common sense on the feedback loop from hell. I am wondering if someone has spiked me with L.S.D or, indeed the human race has finally lost the plot. Is this a bad trip? A game? Personaly i want to live, i want my children to live, and with an NHS that can stil support those with Cancers, a whole bunch of other Long term health conditions people who had the mis fortune of being born with list goes on. who will live? who will die? Will we go back to the good old days of paying to see the doctor.. all which could of been avoided if everybody stayed the hell inside. You got running water?, a toilet that flushes? Some food items? People who love you? Nobody is going to starve, more likely we are going to be wiped out due to this virus and ignorance. Take it seriously. What we do affects others indirectly if not ourselves

ilovecakeandwine · 24/03/2020 16:20

The government guidelines is you can shop but it seams it's not enough for some people. I'm following government guidelines if I was told to not leave the house for 14 days I wouldn't but I've not been told that .
In India it's 21 days complete lockdown no going out but they have been given them a few hours to shop but obviously now you've got everyone panic buying .
We got no notice and I had already planned to go out and as mentioned previous I haven't panic shopped just got what I need. Now we've got people on here saying only go out every 14 days etc , what fruit veg milk bread ? . So now it's make do with what you've you've got like tins pasta rice , frozen foods all these things were all low and still not in the shops .

steppemum · 24/03/2020 17:36

maadlady

I am taking it seriously, that was a fucking patronising post.

We have been properly and seriously social distancing for 3 weeks, hand washing, etc. Way before everyone else was taking it seriously. Stopped all extra curricula activities ages ago. I persuaded my parents aged 79 to do the same, to not go to all their 500 retirement activities.

I have an on-line shopping slot every Tuesday, which seems to still be valid. I rarely if ever go to the supermarket. This morning I had shopping for 4 households delivered to me, and then went out in my car and delivered it to the 3 other households who are all isolating due to age and ill health, to stop them from going to the shop, as they can't get delivery slots. Before the shopping came I washed down all the surfaces in my kitchen etc with disinfectant, and wouldn't let the kids help sort, to reduce number of people in contact with the shopping

My point was that with a large household shopping once a week is going to be necessary, recognised by the government who has asked us to do a weekly shop, instead of what most people do which is pop into the shops for bead and milk multiple times per week.

Then you come on and tell people they can't weekly shop and increase the panic.

It is ok to weekly shop, don't go to the shops in between, go on-line and do a delivery or do click and collect for that weekly shop so that you do not need to go round the supermarket. Be flexible, cook the tins at the back of the cupboard that have been sitting there for ages. Buy what is available and don't go to another shop.

But you know what? I didn't stockpile. I don't have cupboards full of stuff. I am going to need to shop.

crustycrab · 24/03/2020 17:39

"Some people go everyday but if they pick a quiet time so what !!" 🤦🏽‍♀️

Exactly what you've been told not to do. It should constantly be "quiet" at the moment.

Of course there will be people who do need to go once a week but they should be in the minority. At the moment every man and his dog seems to have a need to go out. And that is what will put us in lockdown.

steppemum · 24/03/2020 17:42

And that is what will put us in lockdown.

and the irony is we are supposed to be in lockdown now!

crustycrab · 24/03/2020 18:06

Well yes. Wait until we are on true lockdown. The people of this country just can't help but try to find loopholes

ilovecakeandwine · 24/03/2020 18:07

@crustycrab your wrong it is not what we have been told not to do .
You need to stop judging how do you know everyone went out today , did you go out yourself ?
As I have already said for the last couple of weeks we haven't been able to get the essentials and told to not over buy and that even on lockdown we can shop . We can't win so shall I just get enough for a couple of days or get 2 weeks worth like people have been doing ? hence why the shelves have been empty .
I still couldn't get everything but I didn't want to go to supermarket to supermarket I wanted to get the hell out of there ASAP . The supermarket I was in was quiet and everyone kept the distance.

ilovecakeandwine · 24/03/2020 18:10

Well yes. Wait until we are on true lockdown. The people of this country just can't help but try to find loopholes

We are on lockdown !! So what's a true lockdown not allowed to get food ?
Some people are never happy we have followed the government guidelines .
I don't know why you think you decide who has a good enough reason to go out .

ffswhatnext · 24/03/2020 18:21

People though were trying to recover from last week and the empty shelves. There are no slots. There was no notice for people to try and get essentials. It's the panic buyers last week that are forcing people to get to the shops more often now. And it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of slots have gone to them.
