Can I lie?

So I work for Royal Mail cleaning the sorting offices, I'm classed as a key worker because I'm employed by them. I've been going to work and coming straight home but I'm terrified that I'm going to bring the virus home. Surely me not being there won't be the end of the world and they can just get the relief cleaners in. Should I lie and say that someone's Showing signs of symptoms in my family? I'm so worried that I'll be sacked as I've only been there 3 weeks Confused

Why should the relief cleaners take the risk instead of you? Surely they are just as much at risk of bringing the virus home as you are?

somegoodnewsforonce · 23/03/2020 22:50

Is someone in your house particularly vulnerable?

Mummydoctor · 23/03/2020 22:52

And what if all is health cafe workers thought in the same way?!!
Yes it’s a scary time, but that doesn’t mean we shirk away from our responsibilities and leave others in the lurch.

AmputatedSoul · 23/03/2020 23:01

Yeah carry on OP, it's more than fair to let other people pick up the slack so that you can make sure your family is safe.
Forget about everyone else's, their family aren't nearly as important as yours are they?

HorribleBosseses · 23/03/2020 23:10

Is OP not allowed to feel scared?

OP maybe this is not the job for you if it is causing you that level of anxiety. Taking 2 weeks off for self isolation isn't going to make that much difference because not much is going to change in a fortnight.

SapphireSalute · 23/03/2020 23:11

They will probably ‘let you go’ anyway

FuckOffCorona · 23/03/2020 23:17

Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that OP can’t feel scared. It’s a very normal reaction to this. But the callousness of ‘they can just get the relief cleaners in’ was a bit much. They are people too.

unhappyclap · 23/03/2020 23:18

Totally understand why you are scared, but surely cleaning of

unhappyclap · 23/03/2020 23:20

Totally understand why you are scared, but surely cleaning of sorting office is an essential role. I think it definitely is. I think you are better off quitting than lying and saying you are self-isolating, as then you are making others think they may have caught something from you. It all has a knock on effect.

It's also a bit harsh to say they can just get the relief cleaners in. If you don't want to do the job, you may be better off just handing in your notice.

Thespiceisright · 23/03/2020 23:31

You’ll prob lose your job as your very new and don’t actually need to give a reason.

My friend was ‘let go’ Friday.
