To cancel some direct debits?

Okay so about to return to work following mat leave, nhs nurse, part time, husband self employed so no money coming in from him, told to apply for UC but not sure if we'll be eligible given my wage.

I'm going to continue the mortgage, insurances, car tax as that's the most important but thinking of cancelling council tax, water, gas and electric and tv license until the lockdown is over and DH is earning again. Not got any other debts but living on one wage I just can't afford to pay everything plus food and fuel!

What do you think?

Is council tax not one that you need to pay?

dementedpixie · 23/03/2020 21:07

Are you going to watch live tv or use iplayer? If so you need the tv licence

Undecided91 · 23/03/2020 21:07

Im cancelling tv licence

JorisBonson · 23/03/2020 21:07

Absolutely don't cancel your council tax. You'll be in court before you know it. (Virtual court maybe, but still).

GOODCAT · 23/03/2020 21:08

Don't cancel council tax if at all possible as you can go to prison for non payment quite easily. Do call the council though.

What do the insurances cover?

Can you go full time at least for a while?

neddle · 23/03/2020 21:12

Cancelling the direct debits won’t stop the money being due.

Wineislifex · 23/03/2020 21:12

Ok council tax is back on the list! Insurances are car and house.
Yeah I’ll be able to pick up extra shifts I would imagine, but just trying to think of how to stretch the money we will have as far as possible.
Thank god this has happened at the end of mat leave not the beginning!

Can you apply for a mortgage break ? 3 months might make a lot of difference right now.

Wineislifex · 23/03/2020 21:26

Yeah I’ve sent an email to enquire about the mortgage holiday to see if we’re eligible and what the repayment terms and conditions are

Don’t cancel them, call the companies and explain the situation.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 23/03/2020 21:28

I would never recommend cancelling Council Tax. If you stop paying all of the others, pay this one.

CorianderLord · 23/03/2020 21:32

Call your providers, they will likely waive payments where possible

Wineislifex · 23/03/2020 21:34

Okay I’ll definately continue CT, obviously I know it all has to be paid at some point, just hoping to be able to press pause on a few things whilst we get back to normality! Thanks for all the advice ladies Flowers

Best of luck, it's a scary time. My sister is a doctor - she's only 26 I'm terrified for her

JiltedJohnsJulie · 23/03/2020 22:00

Some water authorities will reduce your future bill for you if you call them too. Severn Trent will knock between 10 and 90% off.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/03/2020 22:03

How many months if your CT split over?
If 10 can you push it by 2 months.

Cancel all the direct debits and speak to the companies and council. Don’t just not pay but yes stop the dd if you need to eat first.
I thought people could get a council tax break.

Daffie19 · 23/03/2020 22:05

Why won't you be entitled to UC?
I'm a part time nurse, 28.5 hours a week.
My DH is off sick long term for at least a year and has been deemed incapable of work for now.

We get quite a bit of UC, all our bills are paid.
I'm feeling so lucky we are in this situation with what's going on.

Defo try and apply for UC.

Daffie19 · 23/03/2020 22:06

Or...
I know it's not ideal, and it's not what I would have wanted at all, but if your DH isn't working, can you go full time until DH is up and working again?

AliBear90 · 23/03/2020 22:06

Hi OP, also a nurse returning from mat leave this week. My partner has just lost his job due to coronavirus. We are going to live on my wage basically. And applying for universal credit soon. We are eligible on my band 5 wage. So if you’re band 5 you should be eligible x

TotesGodsWill · 23/03/2020 22:21

Don’t just cancel. Speak to the companies. Yes they’re going to be extremely busy and you’ll have to wait ages on hold probably. Because thousands of people are in the exact same position. But wait anyway and speak to them. The essentials like utilities will have hardship policies im sure

BitchyHen · 23/03/2020 22:32

My local council is offering a two months payment holiday from council tax, but you have to apply for it. Yours may be doing the same.

gamerchick · 23/03/2020 22:36

God cancel nothing until you've spoken to them. You've got shit back to front here. We've already been told, council tax still needs to be paid as does our rent.

TheFlis12345 · 23/03/2020 22:40

Most supermarkets are recruiting with immediate starts. Can your DH get a job there for the time being?
