I've got a female dog and she's due her first season soon and need to get him done ASAP 😩

OP, this isn't the place to ask. Proceed tonight as if it is going ahead, and call your vet in the morning for confirmation. Although they may call you first.

I would bet it's going ahead, provided they don't have staff shortages, because vet practices are run by people at the sharp end of dealing with unwanted puppies and kittens.

Eireni · 23/03/2020 22:10

Don’t panic OP. Starve him as planned and phone them in the morning and see. My practice is cancelling routine neuters in most circumstances but allowing discretion for circumstances like this where there is a clear welfare need. We’re taking so many precautions - ‘contactless’ drop offs/collections, doing all talking & taking payment via phone. Video call post op checks where possible. We may have to restrict further but our management tonight have said open tomorrow as planned whilst they come up with a more detailed plan to minimise.

With dog neuters it’s not just the human contact issue though, it’s things like oxygen supplies etc. Worst case scenario he could have w chemical castration implant injected for a temporary effect and surgery later in the year. There’ll be a way.

BillywilliamV · 23/03/2020 22:10

Nope, you is locked up for three weeks with a horny dog!

AccidentsAhoy · 23/03/2020 22:10

I live in a 2 up, 2 down terrace. It's impossible to keep them apart. I have 1 living room that's open to the kitchen with no way to attach a divider.

Thanks everyone.I'll update tomorrow.

Won't even give him the injection

AccidentsAhoy · 24/03/2020 11:03

They said if she gets pregnant they'll giver her an abortion jab 🤔

But won't give the male dog a chemical castration jab 🙄

They also told me to give one of my dogs to someone for while 😩 um no

That’s very very frustrating, sympathies OP.

The thought of separating them (one staying elsewhere) if/when she does come into season is something to consider as a backup though? It would only be a few weeks.

You never know, she might be a late bloomer anyway

Herpesfreesince03 · 24/03/2020 11:18

Why can’t people answer a simple question without acting like absolute tools? Even if it’s a daft question, which this is not, can’t people either scroll on or give a reasonable answer without accusing the person of being ‘stupid’. It says more about your own intelligence if you’re only able to answer a question by shouting, swearing and insulting the person asking it 🙄

Teddypops · 24/03/2020 11:20

My kitten is due to be neutered on Monday.

MintySpud · 24/03/2020 14:54

I'm sorry, OP. That's really fucking idiotic.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/03/2020 14:58

I’d find another vet that will do the injection. They can do it with the dog being in your car boot without being within 2m of you and pay over the phone.

Kirschcherry · 24/03/2020 15:28

My vets are not doing routine ops. They are doing their absolute best with a skeleton staff and getting a lot of abuse from entitled owners. These people are doing their best in very difficult circumstances, please treat them with respect and courtesy and be grateful that they are doing everything they can to make sure that there is someone there for the actual emergencies.

ErrolFinn · 24/03/2020 15:37

The BVA/RCVS has recommended to only see emergencies from now on. That literally means seeing things that will die if they are not seen. Unfortunately all routine procedures will need to be put on hold.

Veterinary staff are taking a lot of abuse from people which they don't deserve. They are putting themselves at risk to keep your pets alive, please remember this.

AccidentsAhoy · 24/03/2020 15:56

I just rang to ask about the injection.

She said it's the same price as normal castration.

She said they're asking people to wait 4 weeks

I explained I'm worried about my female getting pregnant.

I asked if it's the same situation in every vets around Manchester, she replied

'well if you're going to shop around we don't want your dog as a client'

Shock

I said that I've been with them for years and I just wnat to make sure my dogs are safe

She out me on SPEAKERPHONE and started shouting that they can't break the law Confused

I said I'm upset about you saying you don't wnat us as clients Because Iasked if it's the same situation all over Manchester?

When the male vet started shouting at me I put the phone down and criedi called back and she refused to give me her name.

I said I understand you're stressed but you shouldn't be taking it out in clients!

AccidentsAhoy · 24/03/2020 15:58

I honestly didn't shout. I wasn't rude. I'm not like that. I was just asking if they knew if all vets are the same now as I just wanted a temporary injection until I could take him back there for his operation.

I've used them for YEARS.

And in normal circumstances I wouldn't take my dog anywhere else.
It really hurt that they said they didn't want us to go there because I asked a question.

The BVA/RCVS has recommended to only see emergencies from now on. That literally means seeing things that will die if they are not seen
our (initial, quick-fire) guidance is “emergencies and fulfilment of urgent prescriptions”. And “emergencies” is never limited to preservation of life only, our priority is always animal welfare. I can think of plenty emergencies that are not literal life-or-death but if not seen would lead to unacceptable suffering. And conversely many where we would euthanise rather than preserve life, our emergency criteria is pretty rarely just “this animal will die if not seen” (obv sometimes it is if it’s a fixable urgent problem!)

We are also all being left to our own devices to interpret what is an “emergency” and what is an “urgent prescription”. Potentially a suprelorin implant could fall under the latter, dependent on context. I’d say ask to book a phone consult with the actual vet to discuss the situation in detail. Or book a phone consult with a vet at a different practice to discuss, it’ll be down to the interpretation of the individual vet based on the details of the case.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/03/2020 16:02

I guess they’re a bit stressed. They probably never thought they’d be risking their lives by going to work as a vet.

Eireni · 24/03/2020 16:05

Wow, we cross posted. I would not accept that kind of attitude from my staff at any time, but it sounds like that vet is ok with it! Hope you’re ok that sounds really upsetting.

Darklane · 24/03/2020 16:13

If you’re being shouted at over the phone I’d change vets anyway. No client should be treated like that.
I have a vet appointment in three weeks time. One of my little dogs has a monthly appointment to check her condition & adjust if necessary the three heart meds she is on. She almost died last autumn but the treatment has stabilised her to the point that my vet says “ it’s just like a normal heart now” but she needs the regular checks. I had a phone call this week to say my next appointment has been moved from the main surgery to a small outlying one with just one vet where my own vet will see her, they haven’t cancelled it.

ErrolFinn · 24/03/2020 16:36

@Eireni - Perhaps I was a bit hasty with my wording but I've spent all day trying to convince people their guinea pig nail clip is not essential travel. We are working with the criteria of is seeing this animal worth the risk to human life? We are only seeing GDVs, Pyometras, dyspnoea, RTAs etc. Sore ears and eyes are offered a telemedicine consult. We are not offering neutering or Suprelorin implants.

MintySpud · 24/03/2020 17:11

I would change vets.

AccidentsAhoy · 24/03/2020 17:21

Am going to.

Am gutted as they are usually so nice.

Part of me wants to forgive as I know what a horrible time it is but it was really hurtful and said with such spite.

OP posts:
YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 24/03/2020 17:27

It would have taken less energy to ring the vets and ask.

Gingerkittykat · 24/03/2020 17:28

Phone your vet, I talked to mine this morning as cat is close to being PTS. One owner is allowed in the building for PTS, I know some vets are not allowing any owners in the building and you leave your animal at the door, they collect and treat and do the same to return the animal.

She also said guidance is changing daily so what applies today might not tomorrow.
