Vitamin D deficiency?

We have been inside for a month except for maybe 20 minutes outside a day. (We don't have a garden). Do we need vitamin D? I can't find any official guidance on this?

Under those circumstances, yes definitely supplement if you can

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/03/2020 19:46

You can order vitabiotic’s baby drops from Amazon for baby. For you - order a multivitamin with vitamin d3 and calcium. Ideally some omega 3 too.

The official guidance is here:

Yes, you should take a supplement

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/03/2020 19:47

Salmon and egg yolks contain a lot of vitamin d too

Sgtmajormummy · 23/03/2020 19:50

Hi Seventyone, we meet again!

Vitamin D is very important and not in all supplements.
I had a health crisis 2 years ago where I’d run myself into the ground. My blood tests showed Vitamin D was about 4 (should be 25!).

Multicentrum Donna was what my doctor advised. It contains high levels of Vitamin D.

At the moment I’m giving everybody in the family a multivitamin at breakfast and every 2 days magnesium and potassium.
Supradyn or Betotal (my kids loved that stuff when they were little) are advertising a lot. Not sure about the Vit D content, though.

Order it online from Amazon.

I had a severe deficiency a decade ago and I found online retailers were more consistent in having stocks in. Only one local pharmacy has a different range of strengths. You don't need the calcium if you consume dairy products and/or eat plenty of green veg.

Farmed salmon and eggs contain very little vitamin D. You get the most by being in the sun between the spring and autumn equinoxes.

LilQueenie · 23/03/2020 19:53

yes take a vitamin. there is 70% less respiratory illness in those who take vitamin D regular and a milder illness if you do get one. I would definitely be taking it right now.

@Sgtmajormummy Hello! It literally only occurred to me this evening! I haven't actually watched anything but Netflix for years so the adverts passed me by. Thanks for the tips!

Most people need vitamin D supplements anyway, it won’t do you any harm so yes I would take a supplement

Most people are Vitamin d deficient in the uk regardless

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/03/2020 20:02

They did a study and Canada and a lot of the Caucasian people needed a supplement and ALL the people of African/Caribbean descent did. Every one they tested. I'm white and run outside so I doubt I do. I also eat a LOT of farm eggs so there's that.

Skweeler · 23/03/2020 20:06

Mushrooms have lots of vitamin D in them. And they make more if you turn them gills-up in direct sunlight :D
