Feeding hungry teenagers?

UntamedWisteria · 23/03/2020 17:18

How are people managing?

I didn't stockpile, and just don't have enough food in the house at the moment - they are constantly complaining.

I can do dinner every night, but what are people doing for lunches? I used to just give them cash to take themselves to the local supermarket if they complained.

I can't get an online delivery, and don't want to risk a supermarket shop any more than once a week.

The pasta and noodles are rapidly getting depleted.

Sandwiches, toasties, wraps, pasta, homemade pitta bread pizza, soups, salad, jacket potatoes, omelettes, cheese and crackers, bread sticks and hummus/dips

crazycrofter · 23/03/2020 17:25

What have you got in the house? My teens have beans on toast, fried egg/scrambled egg on toast, pasta in sauce (the packets), pasta and pesto, fries, noodles, pancakes (ds' favourite at the moment!).

Drivemybluecar · 23/03/2020 17:26

My son pizza pockets. I get some puff pastry cut into squares. A dash of tomato ketchup and some cheese. Fold up and shove in the oven. I keep mine in the fridge. I add some ham every once in a while

PiggyPokkyFool · 23/03/2020 17:26

I just told mine that we need to eat carefully - this is the food we have and it needs to last.
They have been having lots of raw carrots with whatever I serve and a slice of bread and butter but the rule in our house has always been - here is dinner - no supermarket option available.
They had cereal with milk, a small banana and half an apple for breakfast. Raw carrots at 11ish. Beans and toast and two slices of cheese with a small slice of victoria sponge and strawberries for pudding(which they would never normally get on a weekday). Dinner is pesto pasta with frozen peas and green beans that we froze in the glut last year.

UntamedWisteria · 23/03/2020 17:28

We only have bread & cheese on that list.

Run out of eggs already.

I will try & make some soup for tomorrow, but then there won't be much veg left for dinner.

what veg do you have?Use the bits that you might have thrown away if fresh - I made a veg soup from: leaves from fresh cauliflower, cleaned carrot and potato peelings, 1 onion, garlic, a slightly going off green pepper, and a few celery stalks from the bottom of the salad drawer - things I might have thrown out (apart from the onion/garlic); all chopped up, fried/sauted, for a few minutes, water to cover the veg, bring to boil and simmer until soft, add salt, pepper, any other herbs/spices in your cupboard to taste (bit of chilli or nutmeg), blitz with blender, thin down with some milk if you have spare/more water; grated cheese on top or chopped up bacon fried, on top, or crusts toasted/fried for croutons

UntamedWisteria · 23/03/2020 17:42

Pancakes & jacket potatoes good suggestions.

We have nothing to go in wraps or sandwiches other than cheese and hummus, but I'm the only person who likes that.

I think I'm going to have make a list and we will all eat the same for lunch every day, rather than leave them to their own devices.

Can you get them to make themselves a batch of flapjacks? Otherwise make them eat porridge or weetabix for breakfast-they are filling?

Cinammoncake · 23/03/2020 17:42

I'd give them a mars bar to fill them up after lunch tbh

Cinammoncake · 23/03/2020 17:43

Jacket potato or beans on toast for lunch

UntamedWisteria · 23/03/2020 17:43

If I had any chocolate in the house it wouldn't last long!

OP posts:
doodleygirl · 23/03/2020 17:44

I think you need to go back to the supermarket

UntamedWisteria · 23/03/2020 17:46

I just threw away the outside leaves from a cauliflower (on compost heap so not completely wasted). I'll never do that again.

Annoyingly I haven't been able to buy any red lentils, which are a soup staple for me, and we've almost run out of marigold bouillon powder.

Why didn't I prepare better?!

OP posts:
PigletJohn · 23/03/2020 17:48

jacket potatoes, if you eat the skin, are very filling.

UntamedWisteria · 23/03/2020 17:54

next question:

How can I eke out 2 chicken breasts into dinner for 4 ?

OP posts:
Cinammoncake · 23/03/2020 17:56

Chop it up and stir fry with some veg, lots of rice?

H1978 · 23/03/2020 17:57

I’m glad my teens (dds) are small eaters but I do a big meal for lunch and toasties/sandwiches/noodles/ English muffins with eggs/ bagels of an evening

I make a bit extra at lunch for dh to have as leftovers in the evening it’s amazing how you adjust when times are hard

Elouera · 23/03/2020 17:57

Look up low GI recipes/items which will keep them fuller for longer. Oats are a good one, and can also be put into a soup to bulk it up. Wholemeal pasta, rice, bread etc is also more filling and burns slower than white bread/white rice etc. Things might be lean this week, but can you add more items to next weeks shop?

Elouera · 23/03/2020 17:58

A pint of water before every meal can help too!

shreddednips · 23/03/2020 18:03

We've had a similar problem as my DH is a massive eater, very slim for some annoying reason and is struggling.

First thing I did was unload everything from my cupboards and write down what I had, then the same with the fridge and freezer. We had more than I thought hiding in the bottom of that freezer. Then it becomes easier to work out what you can cook.

If you post a list here of what you've got I'm sure we could all come up with ideas?

Re: chicken, cut into bits and make fajitas?

KatherineJaneway · 23/03/2020 18:15

Do you have any rice and / or frozen veg?

UntamedWisteria · 23/03/2020 18:15

Thanks shreddednips I have a fajita kit and a jar of roast peppers, plus lettuce & cheese - so fajitas it is.

and yes, Elouera will definitely buy more food on the next shopping trip.

The supermarkets in my town had loads of food in them this morning better then I have seen since this all start. So hopefully you will manage to get more stuff soon.

Connie222 · 23/03/2020 18:20

Honestly, my whole family are just getting used to having to eat far, far less. It’s tough really.

fishonabicycle · 23/03/2020 20:19

I've got a booked Ocado reserved slot, bit getting on the website is not easy. I need to do a total assessment of what we have, meals for 3 people, 3 times a day, and what we actually need.
