Anybody else heard about the issuing of passes to be allowed to use a car?

I went to pick up our bread order today and was talking to one of the owner/proprietors there. They mainly sell and deliver to cafes, restaurants, pubs etc - basically all of the places that have now been told to close - so they're about to call it a day for the foreseeable.

He told me that one of his regulars who had called to cancel their order had said his wife is a key healthcare worker (not sure if for the NHS or other) and that her employer had been organising/applying for passes for them to display in their cars as proof that they have a genuine legitimate reason to be out in their cars.

Has anybody else heard tell of this? Is it a new measure that they're bringing in? Or is her employer just planning independently in case of a worst-case scenario?

If so, does that mean that anybody without a pass is liable to be stopped by the police/army etc. and questioned as to their purposes for needing to use their car - or just outright banned?

How would they police it? People would just need to say that they're going to the supermarket for food, whether this is true or not (and for many, it would of course be true). Surely travelling in a car alone or only with your family with whom you live at close quarters anyway is the very epitome of social-distancing?

Might they be doing the same for pedestrians too?

Or is this just one wacky employer panicking and not something that's going to be brought in for everybody at all?

Anybody?!

I work nights in healthcare and am due in tonight. My setting is inaccessible by public transport.
I was messaged earlier on to say there is an important letter for me in the top drawer of the desk. This is very unusual.
I have no idea what it is.

Small practical question about any sort of downloadable pass...... what if you don't have a working printer at home?

Small practical question about any sort of downloadable pass...... what if you don't have a working printer at home?

I wondered that, too. There are a few million people in the UK who aren't online at all, many of whom won't ever have used a computer or ever want to; but even among the majority who do regularly use technology and the internet, I'll bet the majority don't have a printer anyway - especially in the days of handheld devices and the cloud, where you can access all of your files on the fly.

It would be absurd, wouldn't it:
What is your reason for applying for this single-use permit to leave your home?
"To take a print-out of a single-use permit to leave your home to a friend or relative with no means of printing one off." Grin

WeBuiltThis City I'm in France and if you don't have a printer you can write it out by hand. Though there have been plenty of offers on Facebook to print them for people who can't. It's all very unsound environmentally!

Need a new one for every trip, even checking the post box, though they are advising you to group your errands so you can tick more than one box. Fine for being caught without it was 38 euros on the first few days, now 135, three (?) offences can lead to a prison sentence.

Also the wording is published in the newspapers for those with no online access.

Ah, thanks , Vive.

I thought you had to complete/apply online, get an authorisation code and then print it off. I didn't know it was just a standard form that you could have a small supply of to fill in as and when.

Can I ask if you need proof of the reason? I have a scan on Wednesday and if we need a pass we have paper (No printer) and can write one out but I don’t have any letter or documentation to prove I have the scan, which is standard where I live!

Bargebill19 · 24/03/2020 00:15

I’ve heard it not so much as a pass (although some may issue that) but a letter stating that you do work for “xyz” and are a key worker.
I hope so as both myself and DH are key workers.! I won’t be impressed to get a fine...

I did not hear anything about needing a pass on the PM's briefing last night. Of course, things could change.
