Lockdown and Car MOT's?

skineticadrama · 23/03/2020 15:55

Our car is due its MOT in a few weeks, this car is essential to get up to and from the supermarket for food and to help get food for elderly relatives. If we do have a lockdown and everywhere is shut so that we can't get our MOT done, will we still be able to use our car for food shopping and to get food to relatives?

Get your MOT done early. Book it in for tomorrow.

There is no point us avoiding getting CV only to get killed in an accident caused by an unroadworthy car or a car with an out-of-date MOT. I think it unlikely you'd be able to use it (but that is only my opinion).

ilovemydogandMrObama · 23/03/2020 15:59

Think you can get it done up to 4 weeks in advance?

Gronky · 23/03/2020 16:05

Think you can get it done up to 4 weeks in advance?

4 weeks (more specifically, 1 month before) in advance preserves the anniversary. So, for example, if it were due on the 25th of December, you could do it as early as the 26th of November and still have the next MOT as late as the 25th of December the following year. You're in fact free to have an MOT done at any time but, if it's before that month, the next MOT will be due 1 year from the last.

ShellsAndSunrises · 23/03/2020 16:08

No, I don't think you could drive it without an MOT. It'd have wide reaching implications for insurance and things...

Get it done now. As Gronky has said, you can preserve the anniversary if you do it within 1 month, but even if it's not, you can get it done early.

I've got my car booked in for the 7th. I hope I'll be able to take her in.

Surely mechanics will be considered important? I mean, there will be a lot of people seriously relying on cars - key workers and delivery drivers.

user1471530109 · 23/03/2020 16:24

I'm worried as I'm in the vulnerable group and MOT is up next month.

I don't feel it's worth going out! I'm not suing the car anyway? I'm going to ask xh if he will take it for me...but I HATE asking. Surely there will be some leeway with this considering the circumstances.

organisedmother · 23/03/2020 16:25

I own a garage myself and it will not be closing as important jobs are also companies that keep the road, sea, planes moving, people need their cars in a time of crisis, there are extra precautions being taken. I wish we could close to be honest as it’s a massive risk to get the virus but we have to step up when the UK needs us.

My MOT is booked for Saturday. I tried to make it earlier but everyone else had the same idea and no spaces left...hopefully we can still get an MOT safely but who knows. Will phone them later in the week to see if they are even open!

Found this online. Ds has his booked next week

Lockdown and Car MOT's?
ItsGoingTibiaK · 23/03/2020 21:33

@bruffin

I think that advice only applies to Northern Ireland.

WorriedMutha · 23/03/2020 21:33

I had mine done today but I believe the Government have extended the time for HGV to have MOTs for 3 months. I haven't seen anything about private vehicles.

bruffin · 23/03/2020 21:35

Oops sorry

helpfulperson · 23/03/2020 21:36

There will be emergency legislation to extend the date. There is a precedent for that

TheGreatWave · 23/03/2020 21:50

I hope there is an extension, we have one booked but it is very likely the garage will be closed.

They must have thought this through, but it will be lower down on priorities in terms of making an announcement.

organisedmother · 23/03/2020 22:29

If all garages close, then key workers can’t get to work if there car breaks and there is no public transport... they should all be open.

MotherOfFrenchies · 23/03/2020 23:02

The service department my dh manages is closing end of this week, that is a main dealer though - I would assume vehicle breakdown companies would still be running so key workers can still get to work?

BarbaraofSeville · 24/03/2020 04:34

They still need to be able to repair cars and MOT them, meeting hygiene and social distancing requirements of course, but not sell them or do routine servicing if not urgent.

The rules about which businesses can open cover this. I think it says car showrooms must close but garages can open.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52012432

Obviously if a business is hit by illness or self isolation etc, it may not have the staff to open.

QuakingQuiche · 25/03/2020 10:21

There's been stuff in the news about being exempt from MOT for 6 months, today if MOT expires after 30th March.

Can someone confirm this? Mine expires in July. Would I still get 6-months on top of that based on what they're saying or too early to tell?
