Anybody else feel like their work doesn't give a shit?

I work in a shop/petrol station, as of right now its business as usual, and we are getting record numbers of customers through the doors. We haven't been provided with gloves and we have ran out of hand gel, customers are not being limited to how many can enter the store, cash still being used. We are actively advertising for staff as we simply cannot cope.

Surely this is all wrong? I feel like the company cares more about massive profits than the safety of its employees. Anyone else still working in these sorts of conditions?

Question: would a lockdown mean we would have to close?

I work in a nursery and my manager would not support me when I sent a child with a temperature home for 7 days
She made me change it to 48 hours
Then she went through the key worker list and bent every parents job role to make sure they were on the list
Then she advertised we have space for new children as other nurseries closed
It’s very much business as usual
I’m now self isolating as I started with a new cough on Saturday but I’m back in next week

Campervan69 · 23/03/2020 15:15

Yes. My boss only cares about himself and his profits. Making me feel sick.

Michellebops · 23/03/2020 15:17

Speak up! Make them give a shit!
This is your health they are playing games with!

Seriously, if you feel they are not taking the government advice then make them.

You might be unpopular with management but at least you care about your own safety and others.

Ohmymg · 23/03/2020 15:18

Not me but SIL works in a make up shop, no plans to close according to manager. It’s giving me the rage. Absolutely not essential to anyone

WolfOfOdin · 23/03/2020 15:21

It's making me really mad to be honest

Unfortunately it's a small family business. I have spoken up believe me. My boss only cares about himself and his profits. It would have been better if the government had frozen bills and council tax for 3 months than leave it in the hands of employers.

WolfOfOdin · 23/03/2020 15:26

I work for a fairly large company and I'm honestly considering taking photos of the queues in the shop and plastering them on twitter or such like, just afraid they might sack me if I do

I know. That's the next fear if you name and shame etc

If you feel your boss doesn't care then you need to speak out. Take some responsibility for your own health and that of every person who comes into your shop/petrol station. You need to protect yourselves and others from contracting the virus and possibly dying. I know it will be hard but you really need to force the issue.

Do you have keys to the premises? If so, lock the door and only allow one customer in at a time. Put up a note informing customers that:

  1. They should pay at the pump, if possible.
  2. No-one feeling unwell, having a cough or temperature is to enter the premises.
  3. Customers will only be allowed in one at a time (and locking and unlocking the door between them to ensure this happens).
  4. Payment only accepted by card (no cash).
  5. Only allow petrol purchases to ensure you can serve people relatively quickly.

Consider an 'en masse' resignation to force the hand of your boss into providing protective gloves, hand sanitisers anyway in addition to the above.

If you don't take action then there is no point in complaining here. Complain to your management.

I would be surprised if petrol stations all closed in the event of a lockdown as Key Workers would still need to get to work and public transport is too risky. That is only my opinon though.

gamerchick · 23/03/2020 15:34

My employers don't give a toss either. It's being totally ignored. I am considering ditching them when this is all over.

Geepipe · 23/03/2020 15:35

Yes mine didnt give a shit. They are closing today only because of the threat of government shut down tonight. We have had visably sick coughing customers in for days still handling cash etc. I was last in yesterday and was due in today but called in sick. Then they announced closure as of 6pm tonight.

No. You're an essential service, aren't you? Else how would key workers refuel their vehicles?

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 23/03/2020 15:37

I'm pretty sure you'd win a case for Unfair Dismissal if they sacked you for that. The bad publicity they would get might put people off using them in future if there are other petrol stations not far away.

Why don't you send photos to a National Newspaper and ask the editor to maintain your anonymity? They could report it as anyone passing by sending a photo in.

My husband works for a government department. They have all been told to go to work. No alternating weeks, no additional cleaning. They hot desk, it's going to spread like wild fire.

The80sweregreat · 23/03/2020 15:41

My friend is in a garden centre and it's rammed. She said the owners won't close down.
She is at risk. It's all about the profits.
I know things are hard for businesses but people are important too.
My heart breaks for this attitude.

The80sweregreat · 23/03/2020 15:42

It's appalling what is going on.
