Yes it was on social media, but I don't doubt it at all Angry

A quote from a refuse collector:
“In the past 2 weeks, we have seen a 30% increase in Food Waste collected from households, the additional weight is mainly fresh food that has gone out of date and was never even touched, some still in wrappers. Refuse and Recycling tonnages are on a par with post Christmas collections.
That's the shameful and selfish truth of panic buying.”

We are throwing almost nothing away. We stocked up with long life food and are eating it sparingly. I want to keep all the goodies in hand for the days ahead.

Kordelia · 23/03/2020 11:49

No idea if it's fake news or not but what I see spilling out of the recycling bins in some streets around here definitely shouldn't be in them. I don't see what's in the food caddies but I wouldn't be at all surprised if people put wrappers in them.

As for not believing that food gets thrown out when it's perfectly edible - I can't believe anyone is that naïve.

GooodMythicalMorning · 23/03/2020 11:53

we're throwing no food. we were lucky to get any!

herecomesthsun · 23/03/2020 11:54

I am also channelling my Nain (Welsh grandmother) with my collection of tins and jars of jam. I have recipes for easy pasta and bread, It would be good if I can get my griddle to work on our new induction hob. I could

even make Welshcakes.

browzingss · 23/03/2020 11:54

I think the post itself is bullshit. No refuse collector opens and checks the contents of bins before chucking it on their truck near me. Not a single one. Let alone check the dates or whether an item was opened or notHmm

However there’s probably some merit to it, but that doesn’t mean that any of those figure are true or that this is a significant issue.

EthelMayFergus · 23/03/2020 11:56

I believe it. Just a natural conclusion of panic buying. About 9 days ago I went into Sainsbury's for milk and you have to walk past the fresh fruit and veg section - it was completely empty. What's the point of panic buying fresh fruit? You can't store it. We've been using up the stuff at the bottom of the freezer and back of cupboards which has been shit, but we're not well enough to taste anything anyway.

caz114 · 23/03/2020 11:56

Sorry it was me!

Found a jar of unopened beetroot from 2014, it no longer looked like beetroot so I threw it away unopened.
Sorry again

browzingss · 23/03/2020 11:56

In most supermarkets that I’ve visited, fresh fruit aisles for example are pretty much normally stocked - whereas frozen veg for example is stripped bare. People aren’t panic buying fresh fruit or fresh food in general, hence why pasta & rice are constantly sold out.

diddl · 23/03/2020 11:58

Not necessarily panic buying, but trying to get the usual amount of stuff in less shops.

Haffiana · 23/03/2020 12:01

They do look at the waste you know.

Fucking hell. Engage your head will you? Who has time to bloody sort through your bloody rubbish. MI5? The Illuminati??

Even if you think this sort of thing can you not keep quiet at least?

WelcomeToTheAssEatery · 23/03/2020 12:12

Absolutely disgraceful. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

TheDizzyRascal · 23/03/2020 12:14

It will be true, my hubby is a bin man and see's it all the time, he says it's worse than ever at the moment. Don't give people credit that they are being sensible and not creating food waste, they were stupid enough to buy too much when there was no point, they're stupid enough to throw it out too!

Funnyface1 · 23/03/2020 12:17

Well I can put my hand on my heart and say we haven't wasted anything. It's such a shame if this is happening. There's people who can't find anything by the time they make it to the shops and other people are throwing away excess food.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/03/2020 12:17

Haffiana, you ought to engage yours. Councils pay for disposal by the tonne, Landfill Directive and all that has meant that very large fines are payable for missed recycling targets/disposal to landfill.

Food waste is very heavy and all the councils that I work with, across the UK, are paying very much attention to food waste.

Have you not heard of black-bag sorting? Perhaps your council isn't doing that but, it's coming.

Why should the poster 'keep quiet'? How rude you are.

PieceOfMaria · 23/03/2020 12:17

I knew this would happen too. It’s not like everyone suddenly has massive freezers that they didn’t have two weeks ago.

adaline · 23/03/2020 12:20

Isn't this mostly because there's more people eating at home now?

Whereas before people were eating at work/school/on the go, everyone is stuck at home now. So you have more vegetable peelings, more empty packets, more drinks cans/bottles, more wrappers...

userxx · 23/03/2020 12:21

This is surely just bullshit.

Social media bullshit. The same social media that was whipping people into a frenzy to panic buy.

IGNORE IT FFS

eddiemairswife · 23/03/2020 12:23

My dustmen occasionally open the lid and glance inside. I suppose it's just to check.

gaia · 23/03/2020 12:23

I think this is social media bullshit stirring too. People panic bought rice, pasta and tinned goods. Those things won’t go off, that’s why people bought them.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 23/03/2020 12:25

I think this story is rubbish but our binmen do look through our bins sometimes because they leave certain items if they think they don't look like they're in the right bin Hmm

But, I haven't seen anyone panic buying fresh food. If someone panic bought fresh food, they'd be freezing it not throwing it out.

squishee · 23/03/2020 12:25

Makes my blood boil, bloody hoarders i suspect😔

feelingverylazytoday · 23/03/2020 12:30

Thanks Lyingwitch Smile
I knew recycling was analysed.

HedgehogDramas · 23/03/2020 12:33

I'm still using a bag of shallots that have an expiry date of 24 Jan.
They look, feel and taste fine!!

goes off to re-adjust halo.............

Devlesko · 23/03/2020 12:33

Why do some people have to bloody argue with everything? I believe it, fresh food doesn't keep that long, especially veggies.
No, panic buyers didn't just buy non perishables, there's no fruit and veg or meat, by mid morning. It's been like this for over a week now.
