What is happening with dentists?
Gingerkittykat · 23/03/2020 00:22
One of my fillings crumbled earlier and now my gum is swollen and sore, it looks like the begining of an abscess.
I know my own small private dentist would be low risk, they know me by sight so no need to check in at reception, there is often only me in the waiting room and the surgery itself is sterile but I have no idea if they will be open.
Does anyone know what the arrangments are for emergency dental care right now? My worst nightmare would be the OOH emergency clinic at the local hospital which sounds high risk.

Call them first thing in the morning- provided you have not been in contact with anyone suspected of having Covid-19 or are self isolating due to symptoms or a member of your household having symptoms. If this is the case you call 111.
Currently we are being advised to see emergencies only and avoid aerosols however the advice given to us is changing all the time.

That's a good question.
What are the people in self isolation for 12 weeks going to do if they get a toothache or their filings break and they need to go to the dentist?
What if we get put in Lockdown and canot go out?
How are they going to go to the dentist if they can't get there?
I don't think many dentists do home visits. And if we are locked down with no transoprt if you don't have a car getting to a dentist(if they let you go) will be a problem.
Unless they can come to you at home.
But I don't think dentists do that.

You won't get a filling removed/replaced properly, dental practises are no longer allowed to use tools which spray water due to extremely high risk of spreading infection through the air.
Best you can hope for is antibiotics/temp filling/extraction

My dentist has gone into 12 week isolation so my appointment is cancelled !
Lifeisabeach09 · 23/03/2020 01:31
Lockdowns will include being able to go out for urgent medical and dental reasons as well to the supermarkets and chemists.
Anyone in self-iso for 12 weeks will have to break it if they need an urgent/emergency appointment.

I am in self isolation due to an underlying medical condition so will only go out if absolutely necessary. I will phone my dentist tomorrow for advice.
I wish I had painkillers right now!
EmmaGrundyForPM · 23/03/2020 02:13
My NHS dentist has temporarily closed. I didn't think they were allowed to but they have. .
CatAndHisKit · 23/03/2020 02:19
They should be able to see you, OP as you aer self isolating as a precaution, and not because yo've got the virus. It's sterile there, and they were masks, and you can be bang on time so no waiting with others.
Missy taxis will be allowed to operate!
CatAndHisKit · 23/03/2020 02:22
and yes , as someone already mentioned, they said today on bbc news channel that for those in total isolation for 12 wks ther will be emergency apps available in hospitals, dental or otherwise, they will specifically have places for the high at risk group.
