Specsavers - what the hell?

Specsavers in Stevenage are opening up more appointments for parents to bring in kids while schools are closed:

Is there a worse idea? Enticing parents to bring their kids out into the public with the bribe of a free eye test and sit in an enclosed room with another person with no social distancing. FFS.

Another example of a corporate showing complete disregard for the public’s safety. Bring on the lockdown.

I desperately need new glasses, struggling to read computer screen unless I really magnify it. Does anyone know when more opticians are likely to reopen?

loadypoady · 06/06/2020 17:12

I lost a pair of glasses at work in the week and I was so pleased to be able to go into Specsavers this morning to order a new pair. Luckily I only wear readers and always have two pairs on their 2 for 1.
It was very well organised I had to wear a mask and they took my temperature on entering the store. All the glasses I tried on had to put in a basket for them to clean afterwards.
Everyone picking up glasses they were waiting on a table and they did not enter the store. It was very well organised.

Elsewhere we are seeing people whining that the NHS has stopped routine work, but specsavers are seen as cashing in?

Two hour queues for McDonalds but should not have gone to specsavers.

Children are low risk for Covid. DD really needs her prescription changed. We won’t go to specsavers because they are generally crap IMO, but if her optician opened now I’d take her.

For anyone who hasn't noticed, this thread is from March.

I have been to specsavers for a appointment for my son since lockdown , the store is closed you call to say you have arrived for your appointment there is only one staff member they open the door to let you in serve you , then lock door and sanitise everything you have touched. Would you rather eye appointments stopped ?

Badassmama · 06/06/2020 17:43

Absolutely this is awful, they should be focusing on the real and pressing need to get Dominic Cummings in ASAP.

quiteathome · 06/06/2020 17:43

@lemonjumper, did not notice the date until you said so. Wondering why it has come up now.

LockdownLou · 06/06/2020 18:21

Brilliant news. Just before lockdown I was told they wasn’t sure if my five year old was wearing the correct prescription. You do know eye tests are incredibly important?

Sirzy · 06/06/2020 18:26

Ds is under the hospital for his eyes. He is desperate for a new appointment and as soon as they can get clinics up and running (they are expecting in the next 4 weeks) he will be booked into their first clinic, then he will need to go to specsavers to get new frames.

I don't understand what is wrong with ensuring children have access to eye care?!

These may be 'routine' tests, but children's eyes are still developing, their prescriptions can change as they grow in a way that adults do not. Not to mention that checks can potentially pick up on serious conditions with potential to cause blindness.

Am I actually still on Mumsnet, a site for mums...or have I accidentally visited a site where it is acceptable for children to be unable to access basic healthcare?

TotorosFurryBehind · 06/06/2020 20:37

Ah this thread is from March 😆

So glad that Mumsnet is not actually full of assholes that think children being eye care for months on end is acceptable

Liking80 · 06/06/2020 20:44

I work in Optics. A good number of practices both Independent Opticians & the High Street names are available during this period, even if their doors are not open. If you have any concerns at all about your vision, I recommended calling your regular Optician who will be best to consider the correct course of action. They will balance concerns around Covid with ensuring issues are addressed.

Floatyboat · 06/06/2020 20:59

@TotorosFurryBehind

Ah I missed that. Good point.

superoz · 07/06/2020 00:21

The vid in the link posted by lockeddownandout is particularly distasteful, the manager gloating saying he stole one of Boots’s customers because they weren’t open.

The regulatory body for opticians has said that only urgent appointments are allowed, not routine (until at least 15th June), so when someone posts up a video saying they are fully booked and are making x amount of money, I can only imagine it feels like a smack in the face of those others who actually have been following guidelines.

Redolent · 07/06/2020 04:12

The first page of this thread is a snippet of the pro-lockdown militancy in March. Not that I disagreed with it, but this specific attitude really was incredibly virulent, judgemental and unsustainable...

Radyward · 07/06/2020 10:07

I saw that video of that muppet gloating. Soo bad. He has been reported to the general optical council who are pro specsavers . It really is profiteering in the face of a global pandemic. If you email your optician they will get back and facilitate people in urgent need end of.

Maybe the frothing posters should have gone to Specsavers Grin
