And to be shielded for 12 weeks, until the end of June.

I didn't think I was and have felt like I was making a fuss at work trying to get them to take my asthma seriously enough to allow me to work from home.

And now, reading the asthma uk page it looks like I tick 4 of the boxes that mean I'll get the letter telling me to stay in for 12 week.

Seretide inhaler at higher dose, montelukast tabs, steroids course x 2 for a recent chest infection and still need my blue inhaler regularly.

I don’t know if I’ll get one. I have an immune system disorder but I just live with it, I don’t get treatment. I’m wondering if I actually want a letter - I’m worried it’ll be a “black mark” against you if you end up needing a hospital bed.

CrowleysBentley · 22/03/2020 23:29

I'll definitely be getting one. We're already staying in. I just need to arrange to have my medications delivered, usually DD or DS collects for me, but from the pharmacy in the big tesco, so I will be changing where my prescription goes, to a different smaller pharmacy at least.

Lifeaback · 22/03/2020 23:33

Originally I didn’t expect one, but I get the flu jab every year due to a congenital heart defect. My heart is perfectly fine and non symptomatic- I have an annual scan and review to check that nothing has deteriorated, but I have no idea if I’m more likely to develop complications because of it.

Any idea when the letters are likely to arrive? I’d like to give my cardiologist a call to discuss but I don’t want to create any extra work during what I can imagine is an incredibly busy time for them.

PenguinsOnParade · 22/03/2020 23:36

I have a heart condition and crappy immune system, but apparently I'm still not even eligible for a free flu shot (despite the flu trying to take me out a few times in recent years) so I doubt I'll get a letter. Im trying to keep myself safe as much as possible anyway, DH is in a public-facing keyworker role so it's pretty scary for us right now.

Bargebill19 · 22/03/2020 23:38

Lifeaback the press conference in bbc1 - letters should begin to reach people by Tuesday 24th possibly followed up by a text message. If you think you are at risk and do not hear, them contact your GP/medic later (I think It was later this week but can’t remember).
Think both the bbc and the guardian have it in video/transcripted and might be on the govt website by now.

WeArnottamused · 22/03/2020 23:48

We’re expecting 3! One for COPD with reduced lung function, so can’t afford to lose anymore, Autoimmune on suppressants , & high blood pressure on meds!

Lifeaback · 23/03/2020 10:45

@Bargebill19 that’s helpful thank you. Will give them a call to check by the end of the week if I haven’t received one

SwerfandTurf · 23/03/2020 10:48

I should get one, but I moved house a few weeks ago and haven’t gotten around to registering with a new GP yet so I don’t see how I will get it, unless one of my old neighbours finds it (communal post) and sends it on to me.

Lipz · 23/03/2020 10:49

I wish they'd do this here in Ireland. I only found out, through here by accident, that my dh is classed venerable. But and it's a big but, his job don't care :( he tried to explain this morning but they fobbed him off. If he had an official letter it would be so much better.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/03/2020 10:50

I've read 'by Sunday 29th' online so I'll be calling my practice next week if I've had no letter this week.

I don't really know. I don't have a spleen due to a genetic issue that results in mis shaped red blood cels. Similar, in theory, to sickle cell which is on the list but less dangerous,, so I am not epecting to get a letter but cannot be totally sure.

BarbedBloom · 23/03/2020 10:51

Yes. I qualify for asthma and am also on immune suppressants, my GP called last week to say I should stay home

MrsMcGarry · 23/03/2020 10:51

It’s a far smaller group than those who get the flu jab.

A number of charities for particular conditions now have more specific guidance on their own websites about the likely recipients with their conditions

I am sorry to hear about your DH and his lack of support at work, but your typo did make me smile Smile

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/03/2020 10:52

Yep, brittle asthma.

Lipz · 23/03/2020 10:56

Blush vulnerable lol

iVampire · 23/03/2020 10:57

Yes, leukaemia

I’d been quite rigid about social distancing for a couple of weeks already, but the prospect of nothing beyond my own premises is still rather daunting (I had been going on solo walks, or walks with one friend who was also distancing herself in similar ways)

purpleme12 · 23/03/2020 11:00

I don't know really. I have high blood pressure which I've read is high risk but I'm not sure if it's officially high risk??
I'm currently being investigated as there's something wrong with my kidneys and maybe something with my heart but we don't know yet cos I'm being referred!! So we don't know! So how we know if I'm high risk?!

Devlesko · 23/03/2020 11:05

I'm not sure tbh.
Asthma under control, don't take any meds anymore, diabetic take metformin. Had Pneumonia twice in the past, and have the flu jab.
I know it's higher risk, but not perhaps the highest to be shielded.

drspouse · 23/03/2020 11:05

It's here and it's very narrow but Asthma UK puts me in the category and we have two small children at home and DH is a key worker (though WFH) and DS has SEN and should have provision at school but he doesn't and I'm also supposed to be working (in fact I have an external deadline on Thurs that they are refusing to move) and DS has already been aggressive to me, DD has already cried at being asked to do something, and climbed all over me.
So DH can't take the DCs elsewhere/look after them/let me go and shield myself elsewhere, I can't stay home with the DCs, and I can't shield myself at home.
So basically we are in deep sh*t.

dorapicasso · 23/03/2020 11:09

It's not everyone who gets the flu jab, it's a very specific list of those whose conditions make them extremely vulnerable. So those who get the jab only due to age, for example, are not on the list. It's clearly outlined on the government website and I think it's a good initiative aimed at shielding and protecting those people.

dontaskformedicaladviceonmn · 23/03/2020 11:19

DH will get the letter, I still have to go out to work, when I would love to isolate with him so I can avoid bringing it back to infect him. He’s Immunosuppressed so he wouldn’t survive it.

Talia99 · 23/03/2020 11:22

I won’t but I’m hoping my aunt will. I just hope the food parcels are sensible. She has learning difficulties and can’t cook at all - a bag of pasta might as well be a paperweight for all the use it would be to her. In fact it might be actively dangerous - she also has physical issues and the thought of her trying to manoeuvre a saucepan of boiling water makes me shudder.

At the moment she lives on cold food bought daily and microwave meals.

I live too far from her for regular deliveries.

Selfsettling3 · 23/03/2020 11:23

My husband received a phone call. They said it’s until told otherwise. I fear it will be longer than 12 weeks.

Kahlua4me · 23/03/2020 11:25

Not sure if dh will get a letter but we are already mainly isolating just to cover ourselves.
