Is it too risky to be having an operation in the coming weeks?

Will the hospitals be clean enough to not risk spreading infection during theatre

Your ok will probably be cancelled tbh

nellodee · 22/03/2020 22:59

If it's a boob job, yes. If it's an appendectomy, no.

AbsentmindedWoman · 22/03/2020 22:59

Depends what it is, surely? Is it time sensitive or can you put it off?

If it's considered non-critical it probably will be cancelled anyway.

I hope so I have my c section in 2 weeks .

ShowYourself · 22/03/2020 23:00

Unless it’s urgent, I expect it’ll be cancelled, to be honest. I’m sorry. :(

I was in as a day case last week, on the last day they were doing these kind of ops, apparently. Very lucky to get in as they were cancelling all non-urgent stuff by phone. I mean all of them-a member of staff told me she’d cancelled a 100 in an hour, and all relevant members of staff were being given blocks of numbers to call to cancel.

And the ward I was on was being adapted to become an ICU.

I imagine this is what is happening up and down the country.

It’s a c section

But I’m so worried about contamination now I’ve learnt that theatre recover wards are being used for Covid

My mum is due to have a procedure on Weds. she had to start a special diet this weekend. I'm amazed nobody has contacted her to cancel it yet. All they did was change the time slightly. I'm also very worried about her being in and around a hospital at the mo, but she's very much 'I'll cover my mouth with a scarf and be fine, lot of fuss about nothing' mentality.

OP I'm sure for a section they'll have everything prepared super sterile, it's essential and planned but I suppose it may get pushed back a little depending on your hospital, unless of course you and/or baby are being classed as high risk in which case hopefully they won't change your slot. It's worrying but try to trust that these HCP are doing everything to the highest standards for your baby, they will be extra vigilant with hygiene right now.

C sections are usually done on labour ward in their theatres not main theatres.

Also all hospitals will have a clean emergency theatre open anyway. There will still be appendicitis, broken bones and other non Covid patients who need urgent operations. All hospitals will have a place for them to recover.

Most hospitals will are planning to have clean and dirty intensive cares, in my hospital the proposal is for theatres to be the clean one. And ICU to be dirty (COVID).

All non urgent ops are cancelled. If it is urgent it needs to be done. I don't see an option here.
