Is self isolation for indefinite or 14 days?

I'm curious, is this social distancing and self isolation only for 14 days or is it until we get told not to? we've been self isolationg for nearly 3 weeks now and my dh is wondering when we can see his parents but his mother has asthma and his dad has diabetes so I'm using this as an excuse also.

Indefinitely but I don’t understand what we’re voting for??

If anybody in your household shows symptoms (cough and or fever) then you must all self isolate for 14 days.

If you are high risk (over 70, pregnant or have underlying health issues) then you are advised to self-isolate for the next 12 weeks, although that may be extended.

Absolutely everybody needs to practice social distancing and stay home as much as possible indefinitely. The government will tell us when we can go back to normal - but that won’t be until we have a reliable vaccine or treatment, and that’s going to take months.

rjebgf · 22/03/2020 21:43

Everyone needs to stay home now, unless essential.

Pipandmum · 22/03/2020 21:44

Social distancing indefinitely. Self isolate for 14 days I'd you have symptoms, or someone you live with does.
You should not be visiting anyone - that is social isolating, which is what everyone should be doing., especially if they are vulnerable like your in laws.

Thank you, It's cleared up now!

It’s 7 days if you have symptoms?

AutumnLeavesSeptember · 22/03/2020 21:56

No, it's 14 days now w any symptom eg cough OR fever.

KittenVsBox · 22/03/2020 21:56

7 days if you live on your own, but 14 days for households with more than 1 person.
So, my son started coughing on Monday. He can go out tomorrow (but isn't). As the rest of us are asymptomatic, we are at home for 14 days....

Everyone should be social distancing, at the very least, until the government announces it's no longer necessary. Social distancing means not socialising, only going out for essentials (food, medicines, exercise) and keeping 2 distance from people outside the household.

Self-Isolation is for either:

  • Those with symptoms, who should isolate for 7 days from the start of symptoms (longer if they still have fever after 7 days), if they live alone. If they live with anyone else then the whole household has to isolate for 14 days to avoid transmitting the infection to other people outside the house.
  • Those without symptoms but who have an underlying medical problem like asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or failure, cancer, obesity, kidney problems. They should not leave their house and garden until the government says otherwise, which is probably many months. They should not have visitors except carers, they should arrange for food and medicines to be delivered. They should use the help of local volunteer groups rather than go out. They are at great risk of dying or being hospitalised. Sounds like your in-laws are in this group, so you must not visit them.

In both self-isolating groups they should only be going out for exercise, alone and far from other people. All food, medicines and other needs must be delivered. Contact volunteer groups/arrange supermarket delivery etc.

Extreme self-isolation status - these are people who are at extremely high risk that if they catch it they won't survive. Letters should be going out tomorrow telling people. Then they must isolate entirely for 3 months minimum, and it looks like the army etc might be delivering them care packages so they take no risks going out.

Self isolate for 7 days if you have symptoms, 14 days if someone in your household has symptoms but you don't and social distancing is for everyone and is indefinite. We're currently self isolating because I have a cough. I can leave the house on Tuesday but my husband has to stay in for another week. I was mock gloating until I realised that I wouldn't actually be going anywhere anyway except a supermarket if I really really have to

KittenVsBox · 22/03/2020 21:59

Oh, and signs of covid19 mean going nowhere for 14 days -total isolation/quarantine.
Wanting to reduce spread and risk of contracting coronavirus? Visit as few people as possible, and only leave for essential food/medicine shopping, and walking or bike riding etc in areas without lots of people. This is social distancing.

chipsandgin · 22/03/2020 22:04

Asthma and diabetes are on the vulnerable list so they will be isolating for 12 weeks now so you won’t (shouldn’t) see them anyway. For now, if you’ve genuinely been self isolating for 14 days and nobody has new symptoms within the last 7 days then as long as you follow the stay at home when possibly advice and social distancing then you can go out as long as you are careful. It’s fairly likely we’ll all be facing a military lockdown within the next few days to protect us from the stupid. So who knows what happens now!?

Cunninglittlevixen · 22/03/2020 22:06

Kitten - I think your son has to self isolate for 14 days as well

KittenVsBox · 22/03/2020 22:14

Vixen we are working off this, looking at the second main point, once you've got symptoms, you are at home for 7 days.

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 22/03/2020 22:17

@AutumnLeavesSeptember

Stand corrected?

Is self isolation for indefinite or 14 days?
TimeMarchesOnNeverEnding · 22/03/2020 22:29

This might help.

If you are high risk (over 70, pregnant or have underlying health issues) then you are advised to self-isolate for the next 12 weeks, although that may be extended.

This isn't correct, this group of vulnerable people is being advised to strongly observe social distancing.

The group to isolate for 12 weeks is higher risk again - certain cancers, severe respiratory conditions, transplant recipients etc.
