How can staff and public stay 6 feet apart in supermarkets ?

I cannot understand why more stringent measures haven’t been taken in supermarkets.
Queues of people outside and inside, how is this essential travel? These people are not starving, they are stockpiling in most cases.
I don’t know the answer but surely action needs to be taken now (way too late but still).
It’s the workers i feel sorry for, they have little choice or face losing their jobs.

Agree so much. Cramped supermarkets are infections galore

Ideally the supermarkets only let in a certain amount of people at a time so there is plenty of space. Do not know how that would be policed unless we have lockdown.

In France, the cashiers are behind a Perspex screen. The floor is marked out.

I have family in rural France in the south of the country and they're limiting the numbers in the shops & you queue outside, 2 metres apart, till you're allowed in.
Obviously this works ok in the shops in rural France - you can easily allow only 50 into a medium sized supermarket without causing a riot as the population is smaller for a start. In urban areas, I would think it's difficult to implement as the supermarkets are bigger and there are more people.
Unless we're all locked down the same in the UK & fewer people are going out to shop at one time, I can't see it working at some of the massive Sainsbury's, etc. The queues outside would be massive & bugger social distancing...

In spain the floor is marked for the queues
