l work in a large supermarket. We had the shopping hour for NHS staff this morning. lt's an amazing thing to do, and l've enjoyed today.
But it needs to be organised differently, and this needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.
This is why.
l went to work early. l got there at quarter past 9.
The car park was rammed. l went round four times. Then l tried the local housing estate. Back to the car park.
We have an overflow car park. lt wasn't open.
l ended up parking in a parent & child space
Went into work. The store was packed, and l mean packed. Queues for the checkouts back to the entrance, half an hour before trading began.
These people were jammed in like sardines. And most (l'm assuming) front line NHS staff.
High risk for infection, and passing it on.
The two-metre isolation rule was not being followed. This concerns me greatly.
We've got sanitiser, we've got wipes, we've got gloves. We're cleaning the till after every two customers, and throughout the day.
But that amount of people, densely packed, is dangerous.
Admittedly, we cleared the queues within an hour. We worked bloody hard, and it was amazing. People were thanking us, more than one bought sweets for us.
But in the space of that two hours, the infection risk must be sky high.
Supermarkets really need to think about this.
