Help me to stock up on food...

Please don’t flame me. My DH is in the army and going on a course for the next 2 weeks. I have a young DD with asthma who also suffers from recurrent croup so I’m concerned that she hasn’t got the best respiratory system. I’m fact, we were told a month or two ago that she would need to be referred to the respiratory team if she had another bad episode.

So tomorrow is my last day to food shop and I’ll need enough to get me through 2 weeks. I’ve got some tins, some pasta etc, but I’m concerned about the things that don’t have such a good shelf life, like bread and milk etc. I have a carton of long life milk but obviously that won’t go far.

Can anyone give me ideas of things that would be useful to buy or things that might help me get through those couple of weeks?

Thanks Smile

Sack of potatoes?
Eggs

Get medicine for her and you, like if u had flu. Part baked bread and long life milk. Canned or frozen fruit and veg. Disinfectant so can clean surfaces more. Pasta and sauce, cheese. Does she use nappies etc?

But tbh it might be a case of whatever you can find on the shelves at this point.....

Bread freezes really well- I always keep it frozen as we don't use much so would have to throw it away. Part-bake rolls are also useful to have (and a decent shelf life)...... milk can also go in the freezer (or so I'm told).

Dry Lentils, oats, cheese.
Weetabix.
Fruit that lasts, like apples and oranges.
Frozen fruit and veg.

Remember for a two week period nutrition isn't vital. If you live on fortified cereal, it will be boring but not disastrous.

Huge block of cheese, crackers (last longer than bread), chorizo ring, bacon/bacon bits.

First of all, look through your cupboards and fridge/freezer. You might have more than you think.
So far I have found the following useful -
Eggs
Supernoodles
Vegetable stock cubes (I'm using these instead of soy sauce, just a quarter gives a lot of flavour)
Whatever fresh veg you like
Frozen spinach
Pitta breads for the freezer
Cheese
Rice
Any kind of tinned beans, especially if they're in a sauce
Lentils
Sweet chilli sauce (already had this, but it's great or adding flavour)

Semi skimmed milk freezes well, the litre ones are the best as they defrost fairly quickly.
Any larger takes forwever to thaw.
Our shops have no pasta but do have rice.

Crackers are good as pp said.. Also if you have ordinary flour, scones, flatbreads or soda bread are a lot quicker and easier to make than proper bread.

If you were looking for milk for breakfast cereals, remember you can make porridge with water - I prefer it that way anyway.

Good luck x

If you can't get anything you need at the big supermarket try your local shop. Our small Co-op was pretty well stocked today albeit more expensive.
Obviously you can freeze bread and milk, if you have room to spare.

ChequerBoard · 22/03/2020 16:31

Tins of soup
Tins of beans
Eggs
Loaf or 2 of sliced bread to put in a freezer in you have one, take out as many slices as you need and toast it.
UHT milk if you can it
Bag of potatoes for jackets, mash etc

Ingredients to make batches of your usual meals in advance and then freeze into portions ready for use e.g.
Minced beef, tinned toms etc to make a batch of bolognese to eat with the pasta or jacket potatoes....

RhymingRabbit3 · 22/03/2020 16:32

Do you have a freezer? Bread and milk can be frozen. Frozen veg is not just peas - you can get all sorts like frozen broccoli, butternut squash, peppers, green beans, sweet potato.
Eggs last a long time (even longer if you can get them from a farm shop or similar where they will be more fresh, they should last at least 3 weeks)

Weregoingonanadventure · 22/03/2020 16:34

Shopping for 2 weeks really isnt that difficult. Ifs just normal shopping but you chuck some stuff in the freezer. At the point, you will just need to buy what the shop has.

GameSetMatch · 22/03/2020 16:36

Buy things like crackers, ritz and crisp breads instead of bread. I think you will struggle to do a big shop though, with all the restrictions in place. I usually do a weeks shopping every Sunday but I’m going to have to go out shopping every two days or so as I couldn’t get half of what I needed.
