Pub still open - can I report?

A pub I know of is still open! The landlord is letting people in through his private quarters and then into the pub. He said if the Police call he'll say it's a private party. This man is well known to flout the law in so many other ways so I'm not surprised. He's even calling regulars (some of whom are alcoholics) and inviting them round - fucker! I also know of an NHS worker who has a drink problem that is a regular, I can't see him being able to resist. So, do I report the publican and who do I call? I've never grassed up anyone in my life but I'm bloody fuming about this.

I don’t think you can report because it’s not law that the pubs have to shut they have just been asked to shut so I don’t think the police have any powers to stop them. But I’d be very happy to be told I’m wrong!

Topseyt · 22/03/2020 15:24

We need to know who we can report people like this to. I'm not sure how it is being policed.

That landlord sounds like a wanker.

britnay · 22/03/2020 15:25

101 - non emergency line

SamSeabornforPresident · 22/03/2020 15:25

If it's in Scotland I think NS has said the police can enforce closure.

Camopetals · 22/03/2020 15:27

I would report him to environmental health and the licensing authorities

Darbs76 · 22/03/2020 15:28

I’d report to 101

Popsandevie · 22/03/2020 15:29

The police have no powers to do anything in this instance.

combatbarbie · 22/03/2020 15:32

Police in Hampshire were going round after 6pm on Friday closing pubs down 🤔

Ledkr · 22/03/2020 15:33

My dh is police and he said they went into town last night to check they were all closed so surely must be something in place to give them powers.

WorraLiberty · 22/03/2020 15:34

If he's pretending to have a private party, the police can't really prove otherwise, so I doubt there's anything they can do.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 22/03/2020 15:35

I hadn't thought of environmental health or the licensing authority, great idea and yes @Topseyt he is a wanker! It's his sheer audacity - inviting people!

Yes, police have the powers to shut places down. Several pubs here were caught claiming to be having "private parties" and they got closed. Police also have the power to remove the licenses of places who refuse to comply.

Butterymuffin · 22/03/2020 15:38

I'd contact the police and the council, but also your local paper and put them onto it to name and shame.

Songofsixpence · 22/03/2020 15:40

There’s a pub here on the seafront that is open. They have an outside sitting area and serving drinks in plastic cups claiming that it’s takeaway only

It has been reported but not sure what anyone can do about it.

I’ve added it to my list of places I will never go to again when this is over

Roselilly36 · 22/03/2020 15:42

Perhaps this sort of thing will be covered in the emergency bill, being rushed through. Venues that don’t comply should lose their licences permanently, with large fines/sentences.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 22/03/2020 15:47

That's my feeling @Songofsixpence

Frownette · 22/03/2020 15:54

@Songofsixpence we have a seafood place here which is basically like a kebab van in structure and has always only had outside seating (most people sit on the wall though, it's directly on the beach) so they're exempt - they're still open but specify 2 metres apart if there's more than one person waiting for food and contactless payment only.

Frownette · 22/03/2020 15:55

@Oblahdeeoblahdoe I'd report pub

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 22/03/2020 16:06

@Frownette Just trawling the local authority's website to see how to do it! Clear as mud!

oh dear! From what you've said doesn't seem like any police community officers are around either. I've never even seen z police officer in my town.

Maybe an online report?

MitziK · 23/03/2020 12:16

The police can (and will) notify the licensing authority.

Seen it happen this weekend near to where MIL lives.

Bluntness100 · 23/03/2020 12:21

It’s the licensing authority at your local council. Give them a call. Potentially loosing their licence might be enough for him to stop it.

I suspect a lot of small landlords are doing this, it’s similar to lock ins, which they also pretend to be private parties and was my first thought when they shut the pubs, that some twats will basically move to lock ins.
