What next for Year 11 ?

Sorry if this has already been discussed..

I think it was the right decision to cancel the GCSE exams and I know the finer details of how the grades will be awarded are yet to be worked through, but what are your Year 11 DC planning to do to occupy the next 6+ months. It seems such a long time.. I worry about the mental health of my DS. All his plans for the Summer have been cancelled and he will be isolated from meeting his friends, except for online gaming. I feel we need to have some sort of plan to keep him sane.

Are they meant to be still working to finish the final topics that they didn't get time to finish in class and continue revising ? It does seem pointless if they aren't taking exams. Even if they decide to resit later in the year it seems such along time to keep up the revising and may be wasted if resits aren't required. We are still waiting to get any guidance from the school which I'm sure will come as soon as SLT have finished sorting out arrangements for supervising the Key Worker children and had time to catch their breath,

Have you received any communication from your schools ?

What plans do your DC have to fill the 6 months ?

We don't know. School work all finished here. The results are going to be available some time in July. We were hoping that the results would be made available earlier so ds could start work on A level subjects. We now have a potential 4 months of sitting at home without anything to focus on.

I know and they won't be able to do the usual things that kids do after GCSEs. DS was meant to be doing NCS and scout camp.. both have been cancelled for very good reasons, but the thought of having him home for so long whilst I try any work worries me. He is going to be so bored.

School has the same issue. We are still setting work but I don't expect much will be done.

I would suggest reading around the subjects they want to do at A -level using online resources. They could do a mini computer slills cause or keep their Maths/reading skills sharp or maybe watch documentaries.

It does seem a long time to do nothing and will make A level or anything they do in year 12 seem that much harder.

Course!

Any other suggestions of how your Yr11s are going to fill the next 6 months without going insane ?

Maybe they could check out the online courses on Udemy (or other online learning platforms), see if their is anything that might interest them. Expand their knowledge and stop them getting bored.

I mean this gently but boredom is so far from the worst of all this.

Driving theory test is on our agenda . His 6th form has set summer work projects for his A level subjects so he will make a start on those early I expect. Learning to use a washing iron , washing machine and learning to cook too in preparation for uni in a couple of years .

My year 11 is doing some prep work for the college course he hopes to start in September.
It'll be relaxed, but they need something to do!
