To insist that from tomorrow I will be practicing social distancing?

I work in a school. I have facemasks on order and from Tomorrow i will be wearing gloves in work. I should add I work in Special Education so it's close contact work. I will be telling my boss i shall be socially distancing myself the recommended 2m from the pupils, my colleagues, environments such as the staffroom etc. This will impinge on my ability to do my job as fully as possible. Aibu?

Do you have underlying health conditions?

AriadnesFilament · 22/03/2020 13:59

And when you say you “work in Special Education” - in what capacity?

BacklashStarts · 22/03/2020 14:00

Can you actually do your job like that? I think you need to go or not go. If you choose not you need to let them know and take the consequences to pay etc if there are any.

grudieabbey · 22/03/2020 14:00

Nurses don’t do this so unless you have an underlining health issue drip feed then YABU. You cannot teach like that - I’m a teacher. Either do your job or don’t.

slashlover · 22/03/2020 14:00

Washing hands works better than gloves. Unless it's specific masks they wont do anything, if it is the masks which work then YABU to buy them when hospitals have none.

noblegiraffe · 22/03/2020 14:01

What difference will the gloves make? The virus doesn’t get absorbed by skin, the issue with your hands is then transferring it to your face which will happen if you are wearing gloves or not.

Surely regular hand washing would be better?

notreallybotheredaboutausernam · 22/03/2020 14:02

What do you think the mask will do??

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/03/2020 14:03

Yes. Yabu.

Bbq1 · 22/03/2020 14:04

Sorry I wasn't intending drip feed. I had cancer 8 years ago-lymphoma- and due to conditions arising from that I take prescribed iron tablets. have vit b12 injections, a chronic bowel condition and I have annual flu jabs. I work in a full hands on capacity.

rosiejaune · 22/03/2020 14:06

YABU.

a) Face masks are designed to stop you spreading it mainly, not catching it. And if you have it, you would be at home anyway.

b) People who aren't used to/trained to use them, tend to touch their face more, not less, which makes it worse.

c) Closer contact is not advised against where it's necessary. Which it is for your job. So stop over-reacting and do your job, or go home with no pay.

BacklashStarts · 22/03/2020 14:06

Yabu not to post this in the cv topic

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/03/2020 14:07

OP,I think I'd ask to be signed off from work by your GP in your situation.

AriadnesFilament · 22/03/2020 14:07

Oh, and I’m asking those questions because I’m leaning heavily towards YABVU.

If you’re in SEND teaching then the chances are that those children are in particular need of stability and care (hence why they were included as still being able to go in to school), and if you’re still going in rather than having opted out because you need to actually follow the full social distancing or social isolation instructions, then you recognise that too.

So I’m in the ‘go in, do your job, do it to the best of your ability, and don’t make everyone else’s lives any harder than they need to be just to prove a point’ camp unless you’re going to drop a load of extra information which would have been helpful to have upfront.

AriadnesFilament · 22/03/2020 14:08

That info would have been helpful in the OP.

You shouldn’t be in work.

Gloves and a mask aren’t going to cut it.

Nuffaluff · 22/03/2020 14:10

I’m teaching at school this week. No way am I going to wear a face mask.
Those children are going to be worried enough.
If you have an underlying health condition then your boss should excuse you from being in school.

Bbq1 · 22/03/2020 14:12

I've added my health concerns a few posts back

Are people still whinging about posting on the wrong board? Ffs. So boring. Don’t open the thread if you don’t want to. This is the most awful and frightening thing most of us have experienced. I’m not surprised by all the threads.
And OP don’t do anything that risks your health. I’ve just had a friend on the phone telling me how important it is that people go to work and keep things moving and how she will be using buses across London and isn’t too worried. She works in a school as a TA. I said I don’t really see her as heroic. More foolhardy and adding risk to those around her.

RedHelenB · 22/03/2020 14:26

Stay off work. Teachers can work remotely if they gave vulnerable people living with them or health issues.

ScurrilousSquirrel · 22/03/2020 14:27

Schools should not be open.

They're impossible to keep clean, and not set up for it like, say, hospitals. Hamdwashing facilities are few and far between and I've yet to see anyone suggest that PPE be provided for teachers. All the shops round here are providing gloves and perspex screens for staff who'll be interacting with customers for less than a minute at a time (and most places have banned kids going in, anyway).

YANBU, OP. You should be at home, self-isolating.

cinammonbuns · 22/03/2020 14:29

@scurriloussquirrel what do you propose for for childcare for key workers then?

Crazycrazylady · 22/03/2020 14:32

i think you should either a) go in and do your job properly or b) get your doctor to sign you off.
Some wierd hybrid that sees you totally gowned up shouting across the room at kids who are already nervous is neither here nor there.

iVampire · 22/03/2020 14:32

You need to contact your haem team urgently.

It is possible that you might fall into the ‘shield/cocoon’ group, in which case you should observe 12 weeks full isolation. All those with blood and immune cancers fall into that group, and it’s not clear from your post is you are considered fully cured, enough to not be included in that group

ScurrilousSquirrel · 22/03/2020 14:34

We closed schools here 10 days ago, and there's no childcare crisis...

iVampire · 22/03/2020 14:34

‘Are people still whinging about posting on the wrong board?’

Yes, and yesterday’s poll in AIBU showed overwhelming support for keeping all CV threads in the topic.

BuzzingtheBee · 22/03/2020 14:35

Well done op for still going in and doing your bit.
