Garden Centre Yes/No
Chellors123 · 22/03/2020 12:22
An idea I had to keep DC's occupied was to to plant some veg in the garden and grow some potatoes in a bag.
Should I avoid the garden centre though? I am not in any of the at risk categories and am not showing any symptoms. Thank you
anniefrangipani · 22/03/2020 12:23
I really don't know what is so confusing about "stay the fuck at home"
blackcat86 · 22/03/2020 12:27
NO!!! Are you going to the garden centre for essential supplies of food or medication? Then don't go especially with children. Order what you need from Amazon or whatever if you want to grow something.
LaurieFairyCake · 22/03/2020 12:28
Depends what type of garden centre.
I went to an entirely outdoor one yesterday - was fine, wasn't near a human - payments contactless and humans at least 2 metres away
stella1know · 22/03/2020 12:30
Stay at home. Order some seeds online or grow veg from tomato leftovers or plant and onion. Try and use what you have first unless you desperately desperately need to go, which won’t be many people. I really wanted to go to the grden centre too, mInly outdoors, about 2 weeks ago, for sand and compost and some perennials but decided against it. Spring brings out the gardening urges but we will find other ways. I have some old seeds lying about and will just replant suboptimally located plants, looking out for tiny seedlings that can be potted.

All these threads, all these questions with variations of - but what about Meeeee, in THIS specific case, for THAT specific thing, given our VERY specific circumstances! I really despair. The task is : Stay in unless for essential ventures out. It really is very simple.
Chellors123 · 22/03/2020 12:34
Good idea re ordering online, I hadn't thought about that and using existing veg to plant - thank you :-)
Good constructive feedback from most.
stella1know · 22/03/2020 12:40
@Chellors123 we are so used to “popping out” it will be a major, but crucial adjustment for a bit. I have saved for the garden: sprouting onion and garlic, green sprouty potatoes, apple and tomato pips. If u need soil, dig some up from a corner, you can replace it next year. Shop soil and compost is full of fungicides and pesticides anyway, we shouldn’t be buying that crap anyway. Your garden will be magical with the care you put in and there are so many things you can do: dig for worms, feed the birds, identify wildflowers, make compost. Have fun!
ErrolTheDragon · 22/03/2020 12:45
There's a thread (probably unde the gardening topic) recommending various online suppliers.
I was thinking of phoning my nursery (its only about a mile away) to see if I could pay for some stuff over the phone and then either have it delivered or pick it up from the car park at a quiet time. If it was just seeds I'd order online but I'd like to get some seed compost and maybe some new tubs. But only if I can do it without contact.
crustycrab · 22/03/2020 12:47
"Good constructive feedback from most."
Eh? It's completely clear. No, you do not go out shopping for seeds. Think of something else to do
Ceara · 22/03/2020 12:48
Two independent garden centres near my mum are taking payment over the phone and delivering free of charge. See if any near you are? Then you can support small local businesses rather than Amazon.
EvilPea · 22/03/2020 12:49
Yes. Please ring your local nursery. They are going to be on their arses, they’ve planted seeds, nurtured them and they aren't quite ready yet to sell.
Please please support them
Enough4me · 22/03/2020 12:51
Is it essential? no (don't go)
Is it essential - yes e.g. food shop as only place you can get food (go)
IceKitten · 22/03/2020 12:51
Definitely try to support your local garden centre if you can - phone then and ask for advice on pick up / delivery.
Chellors123 · 22/03/2020 12:53
Thank you - I did think of calling them to place an order to collect. I'll do that - as you say good to support our local businesses. I placed a delivery order with my butcher yesterday.
Goingunderground2 · 22/03/2020 12:54
We've had to call at b and q for essential maintenance - click and collect. Absolutely packed. Felt ashamed to be there. But they were limiting browsers and spacing queues for those not doing click and collect. Madness!
NoMorePoliticsPlease · 22/03/2020 12:55
We chuck potato peel in our compost heap, grows lovely potatoes
Chellors123 · 22/03/2020 13:07
Just called my local garden centre it's an independent one and they will do telephone orders for collection or delivery :-)
Nearlyalmost50 · 22/03/2020 13:20
This is a great question! Times have changed so much in the past 10 days, I thought it was fine to do then and now I absolutely wouldn't. Good advice about deliveries, I will be doing the same from now on.
stella1know · 22/03/2020 13:25
@NoMorePoliticsPlease you can grow potatoes just from the peel? That is new to me! Wow!
Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 22/03/2020 13:36
I did this yesterday, phoned ahead and collected .It seems others have been doing the same as I just saw 1other person.
It's just thinking differently while still supporting local businesses though we have quite few closed due to flood damage that may now ever reopen.
Trumpspeach · 22/03/2020 13:43
I don't think you can justify it, to be honest. I am desperate for some more compost but I really think we need to be only going out for food and meds unlike twatty xh who has gone to the city centre today 'because it will be quiet
Goingunderground2 · 22/03/2020 13:59
Trumpspeach
Find an independent that will do a "click and collect" get your compost if it's for growing veggies. Your mental health while in the garden will thank you
